Melt< Petoskey To Depend In Battle With Un( With the blood of the Cita del victory still fresh on their claws, the Biddies meet a pow erful Furman Breeze on Mel ton field tonight at 8 p. m. This is the last barrier in front of the Petoskeymen in their determined effort to add a third successive state chain pionshim to their laurels. Last week a finghing Citadel fresh man team bowed before the Carolina attack 18-6, the same score as the Furman victory over the Bulipups. There are no outstanding injuries dogging the Biddies and they hope to be in good shape for the final clash of the season. Strongest Team Coming Furman boasts the strongest fresh man team had in many seasons, with Gaffney's Billy Lavender and Charlie Millwood leading the way. To date they have won two games in the state, beating Newberry and Citadel. If this meeting is as thrilling as the last one in Columbia two years ago no one will complain. Many remember that raining night in No vember 1937, when even the "Iron Men" had a hard time stopping the slippery little "Pepper" Martin who did some beautiful running but failed to score. Even with the array of huskies the Baptists boast the Biddies still hope to bury the Furman team in the dust and smoke that Columbia is famous for. Probable Lineups Coach Ted Petoskey will probably send his old reliable lineup against Bob King's "Little Breeze" with the Nowak brothers, Steve and Clem, at ends; Middlebrooks and Bo-Bo Carter, at tackles; Brown and Co man, at guards; and Louis Sossaman at the pivot spot. In the backfield will probably be Dave Walling, at quarter; Ropeleski and Riley, at halevs; and John Leitner, at the full back slot. Varsity Swimmers Begin Workouts Nine candidates for the varsity swimming team received their first work-out Tuesday night at the Uni versityNatatorium under the direc tion of Athletic Director, Jack Crawv ford and Mr. P. K. Palmer. The athletics who wvill try to earn a place on Carolina's first swimming team are Bill Rudisill, F C. Prry, Milton Tipping, Boardman Getsinger, Ernest Green, Roger Kirk, John MulI len, Dargan Frierson, agd 'Willis Beall. And the moleskin matter of discus sion was South Carolina's Home coming Day game with Furman's Purple Hurricane here Saturday. DuPree, who went to Blacksburg, Virginia to watch Furhin against V. P. I. was talking. ". . . Furman made about ten first downs to V. P. I..'s 2, and yet lost the ball game. But you could see that McLeod had the better team. He's' got a pair of swell backs in Shetley and Martin." "Those are the boys we're going to have to stop," said Enright. "This Shetley, I understand, can really block, too. And throw the ball." "What can't he do?" asked Two mey, who had scouted McLeod's team through the early part of the season. "I think the same way Du Pree does about Furman. They're good, and sometimes I think they're as good as Clemson. I saw them play only one bad game this fall. That was against Davidson. They had to pull a couple of tricks to get that one." "They've got a big line, haven't they?" Smith inquired. "They sure have," Twomey ans wered. "They can block on the of fense and open up holes for Martin and Shetley." "I think they've outgained every team they've played this year," of fered Petoskey. "Well," said Enright, "they had to be good to beat Georgia by 20 points. McLeod's got some good football players." "How did we look against Flori da?" DuPree asked. "We looked better than we have all year," opined Enright. "Harvey Blouin really played a bang up ball game . . . on the offense and defense. And he certainly broke up Florida's passing game." "Little Billy Lowry certainly came through with that pass," remarked Smith, who also coaches Lowry on .the baseball nine. "That play certainly wvorked," Pe toskey said. "We'll need more than one goodl play against Furman," Enright adl monished his assistants. And at this juncture the conversa tion became technical, and charts and diagrams were placed on the table while the gridiron brain trusters delved dleeply to devise plans to re duce the celerity of the Purple Hlur ricante. wveek, but after Christmas, the team will meet every night. These two burly linemen, Joe Kr guard, will be on the firing line tor A "Guard Gone Return Gameco 4 When Coach Jess Neely pulled his all-state guard, Joe Payne, out of the line this fall Clemson fans moaned the loss, but Clemson prof ited by the move. While this was happening in a rival camp, right here at Carolina the same thing was being done, but without the pub licity of the Clemson change. Coach Enright saw the need of a good blocking quarterback, and with plenty of guard material on hand, took Kirk Norton-a dependable guard last year-from his old spot and planted him in the backfield. It seems that both Norton, and the Gamecocks have both gained by the move. Norton, a none too bril liant linesman, has blossomed forth as an excellent signal caller, while the Gamecocks have received in Norton a hard working, devastating blocker, that is a constant offensive threat at all times. Kirk, w-Au got h. itait up Easley way, came to Carolina as a class mate of Paul Rampey, prominent all-state back in high school and later a brillant freshman back. Rampey, however, took the profes sional baseball route, and left Nor ton to carry the Easley colors alone. Both boys made the starting fresh man team, Norton filling in a guard slot. After a year on the plebe team Kirk advanced to the varsity only to find guard material inex haustible, to rather than spend a year on the bench Kirk "bohunked" a year thus becoming eligible for three more years. Last year, his first year as a full fledged Gamecock, Kirk grabbed a starting assignment off the bat, only to weaken as the season progressed. Not that he didn't have it as a guard, but-to tell the truth Norton looked great coming out of the line to block, but when he hit his man he wvas not effective as he should have been-and again at 175, Nor ton is rather light for heavy line play. Starting the Wake Forest game on the bench was something new for Norton, for it was the first time since his early high school days that he had missed an opening game. However, Kirk got in the game, and when the announcer reported, Norton going in at quarterback for Elston, everyone thought the man at-the-mike either crazy, or badly misinformed as nobody knew of the transformation. Nevertheless the following week the same change was made againsi Catholic U., and local fans got their first eye-full of -Norton. quarterback. Looking more a veteran than a man in his second trial under fire, Kirk directed the team very efficiently during his time in the game. It was not until the Davidson game that Kirk displayed his run ning ability. On a quarterback sneak some fifteen or twenty yards fell before the charging feet of Nor toil. A week later going into the traditional battle with Clemson, Norton played a brand of defensive ball that was something short of sensational. On at least three con secutive occasions the announcer came forth with-Norton makes the tackle. So wvell was Coach Enright pleased with the Clemson perform anice that he completely altered his b)ackfield for the Orangeburg game placing-yes-Kirk Norton at quar ter. So it is highly probable that the Game cocks may come out on the long end of many games through the ef forts of a "guard gone quarter back". Announcement There will be a meeting of the state champion Gamecock fencing team Monday at 4:30 p. ni., Coach Romu ]us Reese announced today. This meeting is important because all freshmen and varsity men interested in making the squad must attend. Some work has been (lone by the team, but Monday they will get down to hard work. A. Crawford, director of physical education at the University of South Carplina, ad vised this week. Fraternities and tenements will be organized just as they are in other intramural sports and the team that garners the most points, both in field and track, will receive the championship loving cup. Some individual medals other than the championship trophy will be awarded after the tournament, Crawford declared. Last year a neck and neck battle for the championship developed be tween Sigma Nu fraternity and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, with the former winning out by just a few points. Matmn Requested To Report Monday Opportunity to meet several southern colleges in wrestling this year without a full team, has caused J. A. Crawford, wrestling coach at Carolina, to issue a call for wres tling team candidates to report next Monday at 5 p. m. Those men showing most prom ise in the first few work-outs will be given an opportunity to learn more about the game and a chance to wrestle against collegiate opposi tion. Due to the success of his intra mural wrestling program last year, Crawford feels that he should be able to assemble a pretty fair team this first season.
