UAUwCOUIRSIE: BY KATHERINE HINES After all the worry and agony of Mid-semesters the past week, a majority of ab -Carolida studen'ts are looking forward to the celebration of Homecoming with all its festive glory, dances and "open house". Others are planning to visit out of town or to attend the numerous dances at other schools. * The Kappa Delta's national president, Mrs. W. E. Melitzer, visited the local chapter Tuesday. The sorority had a formal meeting and a tea afterwards in their sorority room in honor of their guest. Norine Huey flew to Atlanta last week-end for the ga'me between Georgia Tech and Duke, and Peggy Newton went to Kershaw. 0 On Thursday night Dr. and Mrs. P. J. Phelson, patron and patroness, entertained the Delta Zeta actives and pledges at a delightful buffet supper and bridge party. The sorority is planning to have a Thanks giving party in the sorority room for the actives and pledges and some guests. Last week-end Lil Huit and Helen Burch in Greenville, Sara Ruple in Orangeburg, again, and this week Lillian Gayle is going to Johnston. "Pnidue" Plowden will be at Clemson for the homecoming game and dances. * The Tri Delts are traveling again, with Patsy Ridgeway and Lavinia Lyles at Davidson last week-end, and Elinor Flinn and Jane Perry going to Clemson this week-end. Joan Fayssoux is going to Winnsboro, and Lavjnia is off again, this time to the Citadel. Ann McKay is still talking about the grand time she had at Princeton last week-end. 0 The Sigma Deltas gave a supper last Tuesday night at Rivkin's for the actives and pledges. Ethel Kalinsky spent the week-end at Holly Hill, while Shirelyn Cahn had Murial Murms visiting her in Bishopville. * Alpha Delta Pi will also be well represented at Clemson this week end by Marjorie Russell and Steadman Cork. Eleanor Saks is visiting Leona Steveson this week-end, and Ann Heath will have a visitor from Georgia, Roselle Jones. Virginia Ligon is going to Spartanburg, Libba McDavid will visit Annapolis, and Marion Wyman is going to Princeton. Next week Anne Vaughan will be at Notre Dame for the dances. * The Chi Omega initiation Sunday night admitted the following girls: Edith Ford, Frances Meeks, Bessie King, and Lila Ward. Betty Hughes went to Louisiana to the L. S. U. dances last week-end, and Putter Talbert visited at Charleston Medical College. Harry Clinton's playing for the Clemson dances this week-end, and Ruth Wilson is another of the lucky ones going. Lucy Beck Jowitt plans to attend a wedding way down in Florida this week. Last night the Chi Omegas' "get-together" supper in the sorority room was quite successful. Two Furman girls coming to'the game Saturday will visit Jean Timmons: Eb Sandel and Polly Simpson. * Zeta Tau Alpha sorority enjoyed a visit by the national president. Mrs. Louise Helper, native of Louisiana. She came Wednesday to spend the day, on her way south. Hety White's guests in Augusta last week end were Kiki Trimmier and Dot Bowdoin. Mary Frances Montgomery went home to Kingstree last week-end. 0 Several of the Pi Phi's went out of town last week-end. Helen Wan amaker went to Orangeburg, and Mary Free visited Pauline Womack in Orangeburg. Irene Gillespie went to her home in Hartsville, Margaret BtacKwall and Martha, Young visited "Baby" Brunson in Darlington. Two Furman students from Florida, Oleda Dyson and Rebecca Stokes, visited Virginia Dickman recently. Amelia Arthur is also going to the Clemson dances this week-end. FRATERNITY NEWS Our most sincere apologies and "stuff like that" to our brothers, the fraternities, for leaving them out last time. But with a "duck" like Sweatman, it can't be helped. 0 Pi Kappa Phi has two pledges, "Jess" Tatum- from Tatum, S. C., and Charles Swygert, Spartanburg. The Pledge officers have been elected and they are: Olin Stiff-president, Arthur Bushy-secretary, and D;vid Murray-warden. Fred Quinn is the new Pan-Hellenic rep resentative. The Sigma chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is entertaining the Delta chapter from Furman with a "drop-in" between the game and the dance Saturday, in the fraternity rooms. * The past week-end the Sigma Nu pledges entertained the chapter with a barn dance at John Spigner's contry place. Ed Atkinson has been appointed chairman of' the social committee for all social 'affairs of Sigma Nu. *The Kappa Sigmas initiated Billy Fetner last week, which makes how many? After the Orangeburg game Frank Bryant had a dinner for all the members and their dates. Last Friday the pledges entertained the actives at a wiener roast at Lake Murray. SAE fraternity entertained between the Carolina-Florida gamec and (lance, in the Crystal Room of Columbia Hotel. A grand and glorious time was had by all. Buster Spann will play for the occasion. The 100 members will be allowed two bids each besides their escorts. Margaret Cain was elected chair man of the dance committee and appointed the following to serve on her committees: Mary Dixon and Catherine Webster, invitations; Gayle Johnson, owers; Lil Dowling, decorations. Mary Ellen Talbert and Betty Whelchel were elected junior and senior leader, respectively, and. will lead the figure at the dance. Suzanne Wilson was elected pres ident of Junior Damas at a meet ing of the club Tuesday afternoon, November 7, in Davis college. Oth er officers elected at this time were Anne Welch, vice-president; Max ine Forbes, secretary-treasurer; Lil Bouware, sophomore leader. Re maining officers, to be selected from Delta Zeta, Pi Beta Phi, and Kappa Delta, have not yet been announced. The annual mid-winter formal of the club is to be held Friday, Jan uary 5, in the Jefferson Hotel ball room. Buster Spann and his or chestra will furnish the music. Each member of Junior Damas will be allowed two bids besides her escort. There are nearly 100 members of the organization. Meetings will be held regularly the first Tuesday in every month, and just as in Se'nior Damas there wiii be two dances a year, one in early winted and the other at Easter, or later in the year. 0 The Phi Sigma Kappa pledges g the Elk's Club. Between five and 10 girls will be admitted to the sorority at this time. The club decided to submit articles regularly to the Carolinian, having been urged to do so by the staff. The theme for the year's program will be discussion and criticism of the manuscripts which each member will be required to write and read before the club. New officers will be elected for the year at the first meeting after initia tion. Present officers are Lillian Dowling, president; Georgette Le Sire, vice-president, did not return to school this year; Alice Ringham, secretary; Olivia Walker, treasurer. All girls interested in literary work and having at least a "B" on English for the past semester are eligible to be elected to membership in the sorority. Chi Delta Phi is a national organ ization and has chapters located all over the United States. Delta Sigma Pi Has Celebration Founders Day On Tuesday evening, November 7, Delta Sigma Pi gave a banquet at the Hotel Columbia in honor of its 32nd anniversary. The fraternity was founded at New York University on November 7, 1907. A couple or so of weeks ago there was that story about how much sorority pledges ate during rush week, and now here are statistics on eating at Sims College canteen. Those girls really put the food away, tool These figures aren't accurate. to the nth degree (but whose could be when they eat so much?!) Any way, here's what inquiries show: Six cases of empty Coca-cola bot tIes at the end of each day are sure evidence of the consummation of 144 "dopes". But that's not all the liquids by a long shot; there are 48 bottles of milk, 48 chocolate milks, 24 tomato juices, 24 pine apple juices, besides about 20 or 30 other soft drinks: grapes, ginger ales, strawberries. That's a total of 313 drinks or 1,787 fluid ounces, equivalent to 156Y lbs. And now as for the solids, sand wiches take the lead with about 100 per day. Crackers come in a close second and potato chips nab a nice third. The between-meal favorite is just any kind of a candy bar, and those penny peppermints don't make a bad showing at all. Of course, the town girls come over and help the "dormers" eat these tons of food, but just the same, it's still a lot of eating ma terial. They'd save a lot of money if they didn't have to eat,-but, Golly, it's a nice pastime. No charge for this canteen ad. Just a dope-one to anotherl WAA Sponsors Swimming Meet Next Week An inter-sorority swimming meet will be held next week in the Uni versity of South Carolina nauta torium, Nancy Pope, girls' physical education instructor, announced at a meeting of the Women's Athletic Council Monday afternoon, Novem ber 6, in the gymnasium. Prac tices for the meet are being held every night from 7 to 8 o'clock. A large number of alumni, actives, and pledges gathered at the hotel to enjoy the affair. On Wednesday afternoon the pledge chapter met and elected the following officers to serve during the present semester: James D. Reynolds, president ; Dewvit Spires, vice-presi dent ; Edison Lowvn, secretary ; Aub rey Inabinet, treasurer; and Ray Register, sargeant-at-arms. Other pledges are: James Harrison, Rion Scott, Huibert Thomason, Ed Welch, and Wayne Williams. McKissick Speaks Before Episcopal Student Group "Too many Christians talk so much and do so little." This state ment was the topic of a talk by President J. Rion McKissick of the University of South Carolina to the National student group at their weekly supper meeting, Wednesday evening, November 9. McKissick went on to say that people should live as Christians and not just put on Sunday religion on Sunday as our best clothes. The President cited examples from his own experience and his reading.
