Audio-Vis Extended E Kids Now Go South Carolina Charles S. Jam Director Of E The little red schoolhouse in ing turned into a movie theater motion picture pro,jectors and f aid to instruction. An index and contributing factor' to the greatly increased use of mov ies in the school rooms of the state is the Audio-Visual Aids Bureau of the University of South Carolina's division of extension. Established only a year ago, this bureau has proved to be one of the most active of the extension division's agencies and now furnishes hundreds of mo tion pictures of all types to schools, colleges, clubs and other organiza tions. Charles S. James, newly appoint ed director of the Audio-Visual Aids Bureau, said today that the di vision now owns 200 films outright, and can obtain thousands of others upon short notice. These films deal with a wide variety of subjects. More than 60 are Erpi non-com mercial classroom imins, while oth ers are scenic and industrial in na ture. Films are available to sup plement every branch of study in school and college. James said use of the films is be coming more wide-spread constant ly, and that schools in every section of the state are taking advantage of this extension service. A number of colleges, civic organizations and clubs of all kinds are using educa tional motion pictures. Nor is the Bureau's service con fined to films. Seventy-five sets of science records, consisting of '80 five-minute records each, prepared by the national Committee on Sci entific Aids to Learning, have been placed in high schools of the state. They supplement instruction in general science with graphic repre sentation of practical applications of various scientific principals. Seven sets of the records were made avail able last year; they met with such success that the number has been increased to 75. The Audio-Visual Aids Bureau also furnishes sets of colored lan tern slides, illustrating great works of art, depicting many nations of the world and showing other types of beautiful and interesting scenes. Picture Deadline Extended To Nov. 7 The picture deadline for the Garnet and Black has been ex tended until November 7th. All persons having pictures made after October 31st will be fined fifty cents. JAMES Extension Centers To Be Established Plans are practically complete for Extension division centers of the University of South Carolina at Florence and Seneca and present in dications are that a number of ex tension centers will he organized throughout the state this year, ac cording to Dr. Orin F. Crow, dean of the school of education at the University. Dr. Fred W. Alexander, extension professor of education, recently vis ited Aiken, Pickens, and Spartanburg, where centers will probably be or ganized. Tentative plans also include Lancaster in the organization. The Extension division offers ap proximately 22 courses from which persons desiring extension work in the town where centers are to be held will make their selections. The University of Chicago Roundtable was the first program series on any network prodluced without use of scripts. Rutgers Uiversity has a newv course in the organization of public relief. Records One Quake Weekly Only Seismograph In All Southeast Is On Our Campus The seismograph at the University of South Carolina records an average of one earthquake a week. So says Prof. A. C. Carson. The latest known disturbance was in New York, October 17. Through the work of Dr. Stephan Taber, head of geology department, the University gave the government permission to install the machine, the only one between Washington, ). C., and Cuba. The mechanics of this seismograph are so delicate that it records earth quakes from all over the world. A special clock, correct to the very sec ond, is required to ascertain the cor rect time that earthquake waves ar rive at this station. Professor Car son keeps the clock set by a special signal code from Washington. One of the clocks in the recording boxes is so line that the watchmaker refused to charge to mend it! The operation of the seismograph by the government is for the purpose of studying the effects of earthquakes. The results are used in navigation and in other ways. Meters Installed To Check Boiler Steam Steam In Each Dorm Will Be Measured A stcam flow meter, capable of checking to the minutest degree the amount of steam that is sent into University of South Carolina tenement rooms from the central boilers, has been installed, W. Frank Taylor, assistant business manager, announced this week. This will determine the amount of steam going out and enable the University to get better results from its machinery and also to give better and more uniform service, Taylor said.
