Coach Frank DeMars comes to
the end of his eighth year this sea

with one of the best teams in the
history of the institution. This
year saw two Southern Conference
champions crowned, Bob McCrady
and Allan "Snag" Legare, and one
runner up, Jerry Hughes.
The team met seven colleges In
dual matches, winning four and
tieing three. D'uke was first and
the Gamecocks loomed as a confer

Devils 6-2.
The University of Florida was the
next and the Gamecocks earned a
draw from the powerful 'Gators.

With the summer baseball season
rapidly approaching several of
Coach "Catfish" Smith's past sea
son's pupils expect to continue their
diamond activities on other dia
monds of the two Carolinas.
The pack is led by Captain Ed
Clary, who at present is working out
with the Columbia Reds at Dreyfuss
Dell. Ed has looked so good in
workouts the past week that it is
expected that he will be signed and
if he is not ready for class B ball
will be farmed out for seasoning.
In the event that he does not sign
he will go to Sanford, N. C. of the
Tobacco State league. Clary led
the Gamecock hitters the past sea
son with a healthy .402 average.
The second Bird in line for sum
mer work is Heber Stroud, third
baseman superb, of the Gamecock
team. "Rock" is eligible for college
ball again next year, and although
he is just about ready for profes
sional ball, will not try it but will go
back to his last year's stamping
ground, Sanford, N. C. "Rock"
playing at Sanford last season was
a main cog in the teams play and hit
up among the leaders of the league. I
"Rock" was unfortunate in his bat
ting this year missing the three hun
dred mark by a mere one point.
Gene Robinson, captain elect,
plans to play for Chester in the
newly formed Palmetto State league.
Gene had the best season of his
college career this year, playing in
all of the teams games, Gene hit
the ball for a .330 clip and fielded
sensationally in center field.
The fourth member of the Game
cock team to find a place for his
services is John Burns, reliable
catcher for the Birds. John after
two seasons of "just hitting," de
cided that he could hit the ball,
slugged the pill for a .365 average
this year being second, with only
Clary ahead of him. John expects to
catch for Lockhart of the Mid-state I
league this summer and handle the
slants of Bill Broome, one of the
most wanted young ball players of
the state. Broome recently played for
Spartanburg of the Sally loop. -
"Big" Durham, plans to play for
the Greenville County textile league
with the Y.M.C.A. outfit while Joe
Grugan, plans to play either here
and go to summer school, or play
around his home town. Benjoe Wil

playing in favor of a butsines career, 1

Coach Rex Enright was in a
somber mood. The dictionary
defines somber as something
"dark, not reflecting light," and
Coach Enright's countenance
was dark-and reflected no

"It's been a great year for

Enright sighed.
"Ca'olina fans are looking for

Another sigh.
"What do you think about
Wake Forest for an opener,
Coach?"
"It's been cool this spring,
hasn't it?" mentioned Notre

Furman 6-1, 6-1; but Kerdasha,
Presbyterian, defeated him 6-2, 6-3.
Prince defeated Patterson, Ers

Furman, defeated him 12-10, 6-2.
The official score showed that
Carson, Carolina, won by a default
in the first round, and then lost by

Captain Randolph Bradham was
