Carnegie Music Set Removed Music lovers at the University of South Carolina have been going through a quiet spell recently. The Carnegie Music Set, which is the outlet for serious students of music at the University, was removed from its studio in Flinn Hall this week and taken away for repairs. Prof. William S. Ur R RY REP A IR S p*a YWCA Cabinet Fetes Coeds At Garden Tea In honor of all graduating senior girls at the University, the Univer sity YWCA Cabinet is entertaining the co-ed student body at a garden tea on the Main campus near Maxcy Monument next Tuesday, May 16, from 4 to 6 p. m. In addition to the seniors the following will bee complimented: Naomi Newsome, May Queen; Francis Smith and Beverly Bates, '38 and '39 presidents of Al pha Kappa, Gamma, Martha Withers, president of Co-ed Association; June Webb president of the YWCA; and Rannah Heyward, maid of honor to the May Queen. The receiving line will be made up of the above campus leaders and Mrs. A. R. Childs, dean of women; Mrs. J. Rion McKissick, wife of the president of the University; and Mrs. W. A. Whitesell, president of the fac ulty auxiliary. Presiding at the punch bowls will be Mrs. G. A. Wauchope and Mrs. R. G. Bell. All wives of the faculty are invited to attend, and all co-eds are expected to be present. Sponsors of the garden tea are the following members of the Universi ty YWCA Cabinet, who will serve at the party, Jane Cox, Leola Gare ty, Adelyn Lipscomb, Elizabeth Bird, Ruby Lown, Mickey Bowman, Mar garet Blackwell, Maude Byrnes Chisholm, Mary Cecile Brabham, Nancy Childs, Betty Miller, Louise Efird, Miriam Marshall, Eleanor Mc Cants, Amelia Arthur, Grace Kil gore, and Jane Blizzard. Maude Byrnes Chisholm, chairman of the social committee, and Vir ginia Webb, Carrie Goggans, Annie Lee Moore, Anne DuPre, Carolyn Kemp, and "Putter" Talbert, are in charge of arrangements for the tea. Carolyn Kemp Heads WAA Carolyn Kemp was elected presi dent of the Woman's Athletic Asso ciation at the regular meeting Thurs day afternoon at the University of South Carolina gymnasium. Miss Kemp, sophomore at the University, is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Other officers elected were Polly McKenzie, vice-president; Elizabeth Bird, secretary; and Catherine Web ster. treasurer. The W. A. A. is planning a re organization of the association for next year by having representatives from the various groups. Under its sponsorship, the girls' intra-mural basketball and volley ball tournaments are conducted. Because of lack of available courts, plans for the spring tennis contest were discontinued. Next year, the organization plans to hold a swimming carnival in which personal competition will be held in stead of sororities and non-sorority contesting as groups. Individual prizes will be awarded. Polly McKenzie was made chair man of a committee in charge of plans for a W. A. A. picnic, to be given soon. Other officers elected for the coming semester are Elizabeth Bird, vice-president; Rosa lyn Wingard, secretary; Sarah Sweat man, treasurer; Sarah Taylor and Christine Wingard, co-critics. Geraldine Shapiro was chosen Rep resentative to the Debating Council, and Elizabeth Bird was made repre sentative to the Student Board of Publications. Leola Garety was named delegate to the Student Coun cil of the University. The next meeting of the Society, Wednesday, will be the last of the school year. George Buchanan, edi tor of the Columbia Record has been invited to talk to the group on cur rent national affairs. Awards will be made to members who have had per fect attendance at meetings this se mester. Installation of new officers will be held. Following the business session refreshments will be served. Adopt B Average on English Next year, freshman girls will be eligible for Hypatian .Society after making a B on English at mid-semes ter, if they receive a vote of ap proval from the society. However, a limited number of freshmen will be invited to join the society in Sep tember, due to unusually good high school records in debating, journalism, and other literary activities. These girls will be notified of their eligi bility by a letter from the president. Faculty advisors of the Hypatian Society, recently chosen, are Prof. E. B. Clippard, Dr. G. R. Sherrill, and Dr. W. H. Callcott. Helen Callison has been elected to represent the society as senior orator at the joint commencement exercises of the four literary societies of the University to be held soon. Deputation Team To Give Prog ram At Clemson College Under the auspices of the YWCA, the University will send a deputation team to Clemson College Sunday to present a vespers program. Students composing the team are ElizabCth Bird, Ruby Lown, Dumas Turner, Rannah Heyward, Julia Smith, and Catherine Kline. They will be ac companied by Lodema Gaines, secre tary of the YWCA. While at Clemson, the group will give two programs for cadet audi ences and one at the First Baptist Church there. The students will have lunch and supper at Clemson as guests of Clemson's YMCA Coun cil. Numbers on the vespers pro grams will be a violin solo by Julia Smith, accompanied by Catherine Kline, pianist; talks by Rannah Hey ward, president of the Carolina YWCA, Lib Bird and Ruby Lown; and songs by Dumas Turner. -U. Connecticut College students have organized an eight-week series of daily chapels to stir religious interest among students. A new club for commuters, called the Jacobus Club, has been formed at Stevens Institute of Technology. She is a sophomore in the school of Arts and Science, and is a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She is the first rising junior ever to be elected to this positon. ORIGIN& 4P esHING LTHUL S Me Eleven Initiated At Blue Key Annual Banquet The annual spring initiation, instal lation of officers' and ladies' night banquet of the University of South Carolina's chapter of Blue Key, na tional honorary service fraternity was held at the Columbia hotel Wednesday night. Maj. C. B. Riley, founder and na tional executive secretary of the or ganization, attended the dinner and was chief speaker. He founded Blue Key at the University of Florida in 1924, as a local organization. Since then, there have been chapters formed in 80 colleges over the United States, including Wofford, Clemson and Pres byterian colleges in this state. Student members initiated were David Aiken, Evans Guytoin, Noel Williams, William McGarity, Holmes Eleazer, Jimmy Tomlinson, Heber Stroud, Ed Clary, Stanly Morse, Harry Mims, John Hemphill, J. B. Henson. The new officers are Sidney Dun can, president ; J. C. flare, vice president; Mac Singletary, secretary and treasurer.
