Endurance Is
Feature Of
Intra Swim
Carolina's swimming pool had
its first "swimming meet" on Tues
day, May 2, when four University
students turned up for what de
veloped into an endurance contest
instead of a race.
The four budding Weismulle*rs
swam, swam, dove, and swam un
til their tongues were literally and
figuratively hanging out. Nine
events were scheduled on the card
and each of the four contestants
competed in all nine. The weary
winner of first place was boxing
champion Rex Williams, his nearly
exhausted competition in second
place, was David Rollins, who com
plained later that the 220 yard free
style swim had been dropped from
the meetl Willis Beal took third
place from Bud Johnson, who
should have gotten a medal for en
durance.
Originally scheduled for a large
group of contestants, the meet con
sisted of a 25 yard breast, free
style, and backstroke race, another
set of breaststroke, backstroke, and
free style for 50 yards, and another
for 100 yards. Following this, a
220 yard free style race was sched
uled, together with a diving con
test and a 100 yard medley swim.
When only four swimmers re
ported to the timekeeper, Mr. J.
A. Crawford, the University's phy
sical education instructor, was
forced to cut down on the events
until only nine were left. Of these
nine, Williams had the most en
durance in 5, Rollins in 2, and Beal
in 1.
Seventeen persons, and one
baby, cheered the survivors over
the course. This total included the
pool attendants, janitor, timekeep
ers, and the judges.

Tennis Tourney
Is Called Off
Director of intramural athletics, J.
A. Crawford announced this week
that due to the limited number of
available tennis courts, the annual
intramural net tournament would not
be played this' spring.
Only four courts would be avail
able this year not including the two
vasay courts, and since there are
about 500 persons in school who play
tennis, the possibility of staging such
a tourney would be very slim.
-U. U. c.
Netmen Enter
State Tourney
Next Saturday
Two matches and the state tourna
ment remain on the Carolina tennis
team's schedule as the 1939 inter
collegiate season draws to a close.
The Birds play Davidson here to
morrow, Clemson at Clemson Tues
clay, and enter the state tournament
at Clinton next Thursday as a finale
to this year's schedule.
Although the Gamecocks have lost
only two matches in state competi
tion, they are given only an outside
chance to win the South Carolina
championship which will be'decided
in the state tournament at Presby
terian College May, 11-13. If the
Birds are lucky in the drawings of
th.e tourney, there is a possibility of
wmnmg.

Crippled Birds
Seek To Avenge
Loss To Clemson
South Carolina's track squad, fol
lowing an unexpected defeat by the
Clemson Tigers which snapped
their two-year winning streak, will
journey to Clinton, S. C., Saturday
afternoon for the annual state track
and field meet held each year at
Preqbyterian College.
Mlinus the ! ervices of their ace
quarter-miler and state leading
pole-%aulter, the Gamecocks will
still be dangerous competition as
long as Dick Little and Captain
Larry Craig are on the field. Lit
tle is still undefeated in the state
in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, the
broad jump, the high jump and the
low hurdles. Craig is state shot
put champion and the outstanding
weight man in the Southern Con
ference. Between these two track
men, the Gamecocks can roll up
a total of 35 points in first places.
The most furiously contested
event of Saturday's duel of cham
pions promises to he the half-mile
run featuring Shecut of South
Carolina, Rawls of P. C., and Shaw
of Clemson. Shecut defeated the
red-headed Rawls on the Melton
Field track recently, and the red
head has defeated Shaw who in
turn pulled in in front of She
cut in the recent Carolina-Clemson
meet. The state race will deter
mine the real champion among
these three and records are ex
pected to fall by the wayside when
the starting gun turns them loose.
Carolina has an ace in the hole
in the person of Maridn Davis, un
predictable two-miler, who may win
or may come in last-according to
how he happens to feel when the
race is run. Davis turned in the
fast time of 10 minutes and fifty
seconds in the rain against the
Clemson two-miler and the Caro
lina distance man has not been de
feated in the state this year, ex
cept by members of his own team.
Once again the speedy Calhoun
of Clemson and Red RaWls of P. C.
will iiect for a e race. Most
thrilling dual of the meet last year,
the Rawls-Calhoun endurance test
proved even more exciting when
