Sara Plays In
Clinton Against
Presbyterian Today
Unprecedented is the latest ad
dition to the University of South
Carolina freshman tennis team.
Newest member is Sara Rush
'ton, who this week was declared
eligible to play by varsity Coach
W. Y. Wagner. Sara will play the
number four spot when the Game
cock freshmen netters play Pres
byterian college freshmen in Clin
ton this afternoon.
Miss Rushton, twice state high
school woman champion was not
allowed to play in the prep school
tournament last year and has won
various other women's tournaments
ovcr the state.
"My chances against the famed
P. C. players will be slim," com
niented Sara yesterday, "but I'll be
out there giving the old college
try."I
Freshmaq, Coach J. C. Cothran
was beaming over the fact that
-Miss Rushton could play.
"This is absolutely #iot a pub
licity stunt," he declared, "Sara is
really that good, and her eligibility
helps our chances tremendously."
Carolina will be represented at
P. C. by Stanley Brose, a racquet
wielder who promises to go places
in big time competition, Eston Mar
chant, Lex Durham, Sara Rush
ton, LeRoy Dennis and Bert Hill.
Presbyterian is reported to have
an exceptionally strong frosh ag
gregation, including two junior
Davis cup men, and are rated to
take the Biddy netmen. However,
with the addition of Miss Rushton
the difference between the two
teams is considerably less.
A return engagement between the
two teams to be played on the
Carolina courts is tentative, and
other matches for the frosh netters
are being arranged.

In 1929 the Birds continued to go
forward. Led by Laval for the sec
ond season, and with the addition of
the inspirational leadership of Nigel
League, a truly great cheerleader, the
football team went through a most
successful season with only one loss.
Incidently League is a cousin of Paul
League, now Sports Editor of The
Gamecock.
Eddie Zobcl was the sparkplug of
the '29 eleven and by his superb play
he gained many comments from all
southern newspapers.
Nineteen thirty saw Carolina win
six games while losing four, but the
high spot of the season was a seven

Then in 1931 came the Clary Era.
Led by The Gi-eat Galloping Ghost,
Earl CGary. Carolina came through
with its first wiri from Clemson
since 1926. Other teams falling be
fore the Birds that year were Cita

Tech, L. S. U. and Auburn admin
istered the only defeats during the
season. Six men gained all-state
that year with Earl Clary and Fred
Hlambright leading the pack.
Practically the same team as in '31
took the field a year later and con
tinued its brilliant play. Clemson
was defeated again and the Auburn
Plainsmen, who in that year wvere
headed for the Rose Bowl, were only
able to gain a 20-20 tie with the. Birds.

The past season saw the Gamecocks

Gamecocks Win
First Night Game
Carolina's baseball e-xperiment
with the University of Georgia
under the lights of Dreyfuss Field
failed as a money-making attempt,
but the Gamecocks did accept ten
walks from two beneficent Bulldog
pitchers to score 13 runs and win
another ball game, 13-6.
Errors marred the game from the
spectators' standpoint, but the mis
cues were due to the unaccustomed
lighting.

The University tennis team will
esume action next Tuesday after
oon when it plays the Furman
ietters on the Carolina courts.
.arlier in the season the Bird net
nen defeated the Hornets by a
core of 5 to 2, the matches being
layed in Greenville.
On Thursday the Gamecocks go
o Charleston for a return match
vith the Citadel. Carolina defeat
d the Cadets also by 5 to 2 In
match played in Columbia early
n April.
The University tennis team, un
ler the direction of Coach W. Y.
Alagener, has lost only one match
o far in state competition, that be
ng at the hands of the powerful
-resbyterian aggregation last week.
In addition to those schools men
ioned above, matches with Clem
on, Presbyterian, and Davidson
Lre on the schedule.
The entire tennis team will enter
he state tournament which is to be
ield at Presbyterian College. May
l1, 12, and 13. Last year a plan
,vas instituted by which the state
:hampionship is decided in the
;tate tournament by a point sys
:em. The points are so graduated
hat the winner of the -tournament
s practically sure to win the cham
>ionship for his school.
For the last decade during which
1he championship was decided by
eam play the Carolina team copped
1he title every year with one ex
.eption. The present plan was
idopted for the purpose of giving
the smaller schools, who may have
:>nly one or two very good players,
a chance at the championship.
