For Teams Intramural football resumes this af ternoon on Melton field when Kappa 'Sigma fraternity meets the Sigma Chi eleven at 3:30. This game is the first to be played since school re opened after the Christmas holidays. Sponsoring the tournament which will reach its climax in the historic Finger Bowl on Melton field is Jack A. Crawford, director of the physical education department. The schedule of games for next week follows: Monday, Jan. 9-Pi Kappa Alpha vs. Ten. 16 and 18; Tuesday, Jan. 10-Sigma Nu vs. Ten. 25; Friday, Jan. 13-Ten. 21 and 24%a vs. the winner of the Kappa Sigma-Sigma, Chi game. The physical education department is offering to the winning team a handsome trophy. The outstanding individual player of the tournament will also receive a trophy. Officials of the games are watching to see who will qualify for this honor and witl vote after the season is over. They will also pick an all-intramural team, first and second string. Every game of the intramural sea son has been close this year due to the strict eligibility rules' enforced -by Mr. Crawford. No man is al lowed to play who has participated in a freshman or varsity game at the University or any other school. Tene ments and fraternities have not been allowed to ring in any men from town. "A much better tournament has been the result," says Mr. Crawford. No serious injuries have been re ported this year. Only player hurt was Larry Gall who plays for the Sigma Chi team. Larry chipped a piece of bone in his arm in the open ing game of the tournament which his team won. The Pi Kappa Alpha eleven which plays Ten. 16 and 18 on Monday won the trophy last year. In the final game they beat t1le Sigma Nus 7 to 0 to become champions. The individual trophy was won by J. T. Nix who played for a tenement team. -U. I. c Fencers Get Florida.Trip Announcement that the Caroina fencing team will make a trip to Florida to encounter teams of at least three Florida schools and several other southern institutions has caused an increased rivalry among aspirants for the five positions on the univer sity fencing team. Director of Physical Education, J. A. Crawford did not announce defi nite dates for the duel meets, but he did state that our fencers wvould en gage Florida, Stetson, and Rollins, oin their trip to the "summer in winter' state. Matches with Georgia Tech, Georgia, North Carolina, V. M. I., and V. P. I. are also being contem plated. Under the direction of Coach Romulus Reese, erstwhile ranking feincer, the Gamecocks wvent through their first workout of the new year \Vednesday afternoon. Coach Reese expressed the belief that the fencers were rapidly getting into condition to face the schedule which is being ar ranged for the term. Reese pointed out that few members of the squad wvere experienced fencers and said that they are developing eveni faster than he expected. "Before our team embarks on its intercollegiate schedule, it will meet the freshman team in an exhibition match," the coach said. "Several of the freshmen show promise of be coming good fencers, and they may upset some of the varsity men," he added. The fencing squad meets for prac tice in the gym every Monday, Wed nesday, and Friday at 4 :30 in the af ternoon. Although several other men are ex pected to join the squad this week, the following men have been prac tising regularly: Atkinson, Webb, Jack Reese, Mayes, Jervey, Suggs, and Muir. Drew Middleton, Associated Press sports columnist, went out on the limb in one of his signed articles and called Craig "the greatest end I have seen in action during the 1938 foot ball season-with the possible excep tion of Bud Holland, Cornell's great flankman." The Liberty Magazine's All-Player All-American team, selected by Nor man Sper from ballots sent in weekly by college publicity men and from a compilation of all-opponent teams, gave Larry Craig honorable mention. However, Craig was chosen first string end on the All-South Atlantic team, one of the sectional all-star out fits designated by Sper. Craig, who winds up his college ath letic career this June, is expected again to be the bulwark of the South Carolina track team. . After graduation the husky Game cock flankman will probably join the Green Bay Packers of the National Professional Football League. Craig was chosen in the draft by the Pack ers, but contract arrangemenit have not yet been settled. Cagers Lose First Game The South Carolina Gamecocks dropped the opening game of the 1939 basketball season to the University of Georgia, 39 to 24, last Tuesday at Athens. South Caroliuna threatened only once, in the opening minutes of play. Lanky Dan Kirkland, Bulldog ceni ter, sinking 15 points in the basket led the Georgia attack.
