'N ews L Faculty Directory Prepared The mimeographing bureau is preparing a directory containing the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all members of the University faculty 'according to an annaouncement by Miss Betty Comstock this week. Miss Comstock said that the di rectory would -be published some time in the near future. Lost and Found Mrs. Moon announces that the following articles have been turned in to the Post Office: two tie clasps, two fountain pens, and one mechanical pencil. Owners of these articles may secure them from Mrs. Moon. Philson Labels Trees Labeling of trees on the campus will be continued this year by Professor Paul J. Philson of the biology department. This work was started last spring, with both common and scientific names be ing put on the labels. The labels used are made from sheet lead about one sixteenth of = an inch thick, and the printing is done in Philson's office. There are over 100 different kinds of trees and shrubs on the campus, most of them being from South Carolina. Robertson' Presents Letters Letters and manuscripts of the Robertson Clayton families of For-. est Mansion, on Twelve Mile river, Pendleton district, were presented to the University library recently by Ben Robertson of Clemson. "Travelers' Rest," Robertson's novel, is based on these 146 manu scripts which date from 1832 to - 1889. Education Library Hours The School of Education library is open from 8:30 A. M. to 6:00 P. M. every day except Saturday. The library is open on Saturday from 8:30 A. M. to 1:00 P. M. Alumni Journal Planned Jimmy Thomas, president of K. S. K., announced this week that a committee had been appointed to make plans for an alumni journal for the University Alumni Asso ciation. This journal will enable gradu ates to keep in closer touch with their alma mater and its work. Band Goes to Camden Twenty-seven members of the University band went to Camden last week to play at the Cotton Festival, according to Dean Olson, director. 1700 Visit Observatory Seventeen hundred and twelve people visited Melton Observatory last year, accordifg to figures re leased by Professor E. C. Coker. A check of the register shows that 382 of this number were from out of Columbia, and 126 from out of state. The observatory is open on Mon day and Wednesday nights from 7 P. M. to 8 P. M. Cafeteria Fees Many Miss Elizabeth Burriss, dietitian for the cafeteria at the Woman's -Building, reports that this year the cafeteria is feeding more students than at any other time in the past. Trhe cafeteria provides meals for the girls in the dormitory, and for girls in most of the annexes. Art Department, Exhibits For the past two weeks the art department has been exhibiting the work of Dorothy Waring, a graduate of the department, in Flinn Hall. The exhibit consists of twenty paintings of flowers. It will be open to the public every .day through Saturday between 3 P. M. and 5 P. M. Miss Waring's exhibit is the first of several planned to show the work of former students of the de partment who are carrying on their art professionally. In addition to this, -the depart ment is displaying a large group exhibit at the State Fair. A num ber of students are also exhibiting their work individually. Subs For Coleman Professor Paul Gravely, former teacher of mathematics at the University of South Carolina, has returned to the University to fill the gap left in the faculty by the absence of Prof. J. B. Coleman. Since leaving the University, Professor Gravely has served as the principal of a school in Wel ford, S. C. Sumwalt Gets Appointment Prof. R. L. Sumwalt, has been reappointed to membership on a joint committee of the American Society of Civil Engiqeers and the American Bar Association which is studying land titles throughout the country. This committee is composed of eight members of the A. S. C. E. and seven members of the Ameri can Bar Association, all of whom are ouptstanding in their respec tive professions. American Education Week -The University School of Edu cation will observe American Ed ucation Week, November 6-12. The theme is "Education 'For To morrow's America." "Visit Your Schools" will be the invitation extended to citizens of the state this fall. Last year over 8,000,000 visited their schools dur ing American Education Week. Lawyers Get Degrees That all but three members of the senior law class have received college degrees from some accred ited college was revealed this week by Dr. J. Nelson Frierson, dean of the law school. The entrance requirement is only two years, but many of the men have realized the nossity of ad vanced preparation od do not 4t tempt to enter until they have at least some preparatory training over the requirement. The total enrollment of the School of Law is below the usual number this year, but indications reveal that the officials of the Law School are much more content with quality than quantity. -U. . 0. At same meeting the new officers, with the ex ception of the president, J. Bratton Davis, were installed in office. The meeting was called to order by Frank Jordan, president of the socie ty last year. All the new members were then sworn in by Mr. Jordan. Jordan then made his exaugural ad dress to the Euphradians. He remi nisced over the enjoyment he had had as president and gave advice to those just being initiated. At the con clusion he swore in Mr. Matthew Poliakoff, the new vice-president. Poliakoff swore in the rest of the off i cers. A rising vote of thanks was given to Jordan, and Mr. Fletcher Loomis made a speech in eulogy of him. The subject of discussion for the next meeting was chosen: "Resolved, That this society approves the policy of Neville Chamberlain toward Ger many in the recent Czechoslovakian crisis." Stokes Davis was appointed leader of the affirmative and Mr. Fletcher Loomis was appointed leader of the negative. The new officers are: J. GUS GOINS Fires To Burn At Main Gates Departing from a long tradition fires will be kept burning tonight only at the main entrance to the campus. Jimmy Thomas, president of K. S. K. announced that this de cision had been made by members of the organization because of the difficulty in securing men to watch fires all over the campus. Last year four fires were kept burning on the main campus and on the entrances on Green and Pendleton streets.
