Rush Week is old news now, but in fairness to those to whom
honor is due, Dink Gaines, assistant dean of women, and Mar
jorie Collins, president of Pan-Hellenio Council, should be men,
tioned for their efforts in making this the Ianost successful Rush
Week in the history of sororities at the University. Everything
went smoothly and, besides the strain on rushees and rushers,
it was a grand get-together for new and old students. I
And speaking of Dink, it was she Who,was instigator of the
big and little sister plan which was climaxed at a lovely banquet
in Steward's Hall last Tuesday night. More than 300 girls were
present, the largest number of Carolina girls we've ever seen
assembled, at one time. Praise is due. Virginia Webb who was
toastmistress.
Chi Omegas have moved into their new home in the Hillcrest
apartments on Green Street. Thursday afternoon they gave a
party there for new pledges. Katherine. Knight, a transfer and
Chi Omega from Florida State College for women has been t
welcomed into the chapter here. Several girls, Mary Dixon, 1
Durrett Lipscomb and Catherine Hines were out of town for the
week-end-probably trying to catch a breath between Rush
Week and school opening.
Zeta Tau Alpha entertained for their pledges at a banquet at
-he Jefferson Hotel last Wednesday night. Frances Smith, the
Zetas' capable president, made a toast to the sorority and was
answered by Dink Gaines. Evalyn Woods toasted new pledges
and response was made by Edith Gunter. Attractive place cards
in the shape of pledge pins were used.
Pi Beta Phi's are already getting thrilled over their formal
which is to take place the night of November 4 at the Jefferson
F1otel. So far as we know, this will be the first sorority formal
of the season. Charlotte Burch has been appointed chairman of
the dance committee. What with football games monopolizing
all our Saturdays and trespassing on Fridays, the ideal night
for a dance, it's getting harder and harder to find a suitable
time. Pledges of Pi Beta Phi, in whose honor the formal will
be, were honored with a luncheon at the Hotel Columbia fol
lowing pledging last Monday. Initiation of Sadie Scott, Ann
Scott, Elinor Brand, Clifton Strohecker, and Peggy Bailey will
take place next Thursday.
Martha Withers, president of the Coed Association-is to be
eommended on the progressive step taken in publication of the
new Coed Handbook. It's really a handy book for upper class
men as well as freshmen.
Sponsors for the Homecoming Game tomorrow have been
selected by the Social Cabinet, and will ride in special cars to
the stadium. They are Cornelia Yoder, Margaret Thompson,
Betty Teague, Adelaide Taylor, Natalin Lifches, Catherine
Webster, Martha Newman, Florence Sempson, June Webb, Helen
Kronrad, Annie Lee Moore, Polly McKenzie, Linnie Lee. Grace
Kilgore, Naomi Newsome, Sara Harrison, Marjorie Collins and
Margaret Rollins. Social Cabinet, under the direction of John
Dargan Rodgers, Sara Harrison, and Jack Page, is giving its
second dance of the season tomorrow night in the University
gymnasium. This will be a fitting end for the gala day. Sara
Earrison, by the way, is the second girl in the University to be
elected to the Social Cabinet. The first was Betty Wrenchell
an A. D, Pi, who graduated two years ago.
Delta Zetas have pledged Mary Frances Polk of Columbia in
addition to the pledge group listed in another section of this|
paper. The Delta Zetas' province director, Mrs. James Keezel 1
)f Winterpark, Florida, visited the local chapter followving Rush -
Week. She was entertained with a luncheon while here. A {
lance in honor of new pledges is being planned for next Satur-'
:lay night, October 8. Tentative plans are for the dance to be
at the Elk's Club.
A. D. P1's are having a large, informal ,dance Monday night
at Lake View for their new girls. Tomorrow, the local chapter
will entertain for their Georgia chapter following the Home
30ming game with Georgia. Louise Efird, a neve pledge,, spent <
bhe weekend at Davidson, and Eloise Oliver visited Leila Mayes
n Fl'orence. June Webb spent the weekend in Charleston.t
Sigma Kappas have announced their pledge officers for .the
rear. Peggy Lollis was made president; Billie Lewis, vice- j
)resident; Katherine Hawkins, secretary; and Juanita Causey, c
shaplain. Chapter rooms of the sorority are located at 1806t
Jreen Street this year.
T1ri Delts have a good idea-pledges have been divided into I
two.groups-upperclassmen and freshmen-and each group has a
a separate set of officers. For the upperclassmen, president is ~
Betty Miller; vice-president, Elise McLain; secretary, Lydia a
[,ee; treasurer, Mickey Bowman. The freshman are led by
Blinor Finn, Kitty Bird, Sally McCaw and Carol Cole. To Con
rerse College last weekend went Elise McLain, Anne McKay,
gary Hull Kaminer, Gale Johnson, Lydia Lee, Mamie Thomas r
mnd Jean Gibbes. S
Fraternity rushing which is in progress now will not end untilc
saturday. All the boys have been too busy to give us any news,
wvhich accounts for this "hen'' column. What the girls here 1;
wvould like to know is why the Inter-Fraternity Council doesn't
tet smart and have a pre-school Rush Week like Pan-Hellenic I
