CALHOUN
One of the last acts of the state
senate this year was to pass a resolution
giving to the University of South Caro
lina library a portrait of John C. Cal
houn which has hung for many years in
the senate lobby.
The portrait, which was originally
given the senate by the William Childs
family of Columbia, will be hung in the
main room of the historic University li
brary building.
CRAMPS
Swimmers who wish to avoid the
cramps this summer can try one of the
two sure-fire methods that used to be in
vogue in South Carolina.
These methods are described by John
Hawkins in his "Magical Medical Prac
tices in South Carolina", a copy of which
is in the University of South Carolina
lbrary.
And "magical" indeed is these methods'
simplicity for it is "only necessary to
wear garters of ell-skin or to invert the
sufferer's shoes under his bed at night."
MATH
Dean of administration John A. Chase,
Jt. anounced recently that mathematics
credits had been removed from the re
(uirement list for students wishing to
cnter the school of commerce at the Uni
versity.
The department of mathematics at the
University will offer certain courses dur
ing the 1938-39 session designed especial
ly for students enrolled in the school of
commerce.
ACCIDENT
Discovery of anti-knock motor fuel
for autos came about as an accident,
when a chemist cut his linger, declared
Dr. G. F. Linscomb, head of the chem
istry department at the University of
South Carolina to one of his classes.
The chemist, working with the gaso
line, cut his finger and disinfected it
with iodine. When he put his hands
back into the fluid, some of the iodine
was dissolved, and caused the gasoline
to stop knocking in the motor.
Although iodine could not be used for
this purpose because of its harmful ef
feet on the cylinder walls of the motor,
it gave chemists the clue for which they
were looking. Bromine, an element sim
ilar to iodine in many respects, is now
used in conjunction with other substances

WAR
War doesn't solve problems, Assoc.
Prof. E. T. Bonn of the University of
South Carolina history department said
recently.
We entered the last war "to end war'
-and there hasn't been a year of peace
since, he said. "Freeing the world for
Democracy" sounds almost humorou!
when we look at Europe today.
Aristotle said "the dead are the only
ones who have seen the last of war"
and, for more than 2,000 years he haE
been right.

HYDROGEN
All electric power plants would be put
t of business if chemists could trans
rm hydrogen atoms into helium atoms,
cording to Dr. Guy F. Lipscomb, head
the chemistry department at the Uni
rsity of South Carolina.
If one gram of hydrogen were trans
rmed into one gram of helium, the
uivalent of 200.000 kilowatt hours of
actric power would be released, Doctor
pscomb said.

ENGLISH
English apparently is becoming the
international language of science, accord
ing to Dr. Stephen Taber, head of the
geology department of the University of
South Carolina.
Most scientific publications of Russia,
Ilolland, and Japan, when prepared for
foreign distribution, are printed in En

were, for the most part, printed in En
glish.
