Rion McKissick opene the meeting by saying that he con sidered the Caroliniana group as be ing the" "most representative and dis tinguished company in the Palmett< State" and by saying that he hopec that the University would become th greatest storehouse of South Care liniana in the world. Professor R? L. Meriwether, secre tary of the society, made his repor preceding the president's address. H outlined the work and progress of th group in its one year of existence, an told of the formation of the societ: last February with a membership o 56 members. He informed the socie ty that its membership has nov reached 183. Mr. Meriwether said that the societ; had contributed $635 for the purchas of Caroliniana and that many of th group have given books, newspaper and letters out of their personal col lections. Among the outstanding contribu tions are 13 letters of Henry Timrod letters of Col. P. M. Butler, th diaries of the McLees family of Green wood, and the scrapbook of Genera M. C. Butler. Humerous newspape files have been acquired. Membership has been conferrec upon 30 people for their contribution prior to the formation of the Caro liniana group, Mr. Meriwether said Praising the work of the WPA il mending and copying South Carolin material. he told of the work carrie on by that group. The secretary of the society con cluded his remarks by saying that a present the University and the grou are unable to obtain the high price collector's items that should be in th University library. He said that i would be one of the ambitions of th society for the future to acquire thi type of material. The dinner was served by Mr Frank Smith, operator of the Stew ward's Hall, who brought the foo for the banquet, from the Universit kitchenc two blocks away. It was my intention to inform t e the student body ahead of time of - our plans so that they would be as t _ little inconvenienced as possible. t The banquet was held in the library f e because we felt that was the most 1 e suitable place for the group to meet. I The society has contributed much in f money and material for the building - of the South Carolina collection, and at present is leading the state in ef forts to fill the library with historical material. The exhibits which we wished the group to see on their visit to the University are housed in the library. We could not have found a s place in the state more in keeping for the meeting of the society, or more conducive to the spirit that our work - tries to foster. Rebruary 26, will t be the last day for fraternities and sororities to turn in pictures for the annual. Many of the organizations do e not have enough pictures in to present t an attractive page.
