C. LOSES BUT CADETS BEAT BIRDS After losing 14 games in a row, the Carolina basketball team stepped briefly back into the win column Mon day night with a 31-30 victory over P. C. The game was a return match, played in Clinton. The Presbyterians led in the open ing minutes of the game, but near the end of the first half, South Carolina nosed ahead to lead by one point at the intermission. The second period was close, with both teams alternating in the lead. The final whistle saw the Gamecocks ahead by one point. Waldrep of P. C. shot ten points to lead the field in scoring. Wolfe of Carolina was next with nine. Pet ty of Carolina went out of the game on personal fouls. Birds Lose To Cadets After breaking its losing streak by winning a game over P. C. Monday night, the Carolina basketball team went back into its slump by losing to the Citadel last night by a score of 37 to 27. Unable to compete successfully with the fast breaking and accurate pass ing of the Citadel team, the Game cocks trailed on the short end of the score all of the game. The ball-hawk ing Bulldogs were successful in break ing up many of their opponents' passes and attempts to shoot goals. For the Gamecocks, Hutto led the scoring with 10 points, while Bur roughs of the Citadel led the scoring for the whole game by racking up 15 points. Captain Guy Lipscomb, who has been absent from practice for two weeks on account of illness, was back in uniform last night, but did not play. It is possible that he will not participate in any more games this year. --U. s. 0. HARTH BIDS FOR 1939 RING JOUSTS Well-pleased with the support of townspeople and studepts given the boxing matches staged in the Univer sity field house this season, Athletic Director William H. Harth, planning to accompany the boxers to the con ference meet at the University of - Maryland, College Park, next week end, is planning to invite the 1939 Southern Conference tournament to Columbia. Mr. Harth, a member of the con ference boxing committee, says that the invitation will not be tendered un til the conference heeting in Decem ber, however. Largest crowd to enter the field house in many yeai's was that pres ent at the Clemson-Carolina boxing match two weeks ago, when practi cally all available seats were filled to capacity. The official paid attendance that night, according to figures released this week, was 1,950. Of that num Sber 650 were children and high school -students. Carolina students were not included in the total, which would probably bring the number of specta tors to approximately 3,500. Gross gate receipts for the evening were approximately $1,114, which after expenses were deducted was divided equally between the athletic depart ments of the two schools. -U. U. 0. Gene Robin son, who it was hoped would run in Co the dashes, will not be out this year, the nor will Larry Craig. The activities of Fletcher Spigner, tr2 Captain, will be curtailed this year by me a bad knee. Spigner said that he wI would probably be able to enter only cal one or two events in each meet in- hiu stead of the four which he partici- dic pated in last year. Guy Lipscomb, al- - ternate captain of the cinder team and present captain of the basketball team, may not be able to participate regu larly if at all in the scheduled meets this year, due to illness that has kept him on the bench for the last two weeks of the cage season. Lipscomb was ordered by his physician to steer clear of all exercise for two weeks or more. Last week Jack Crawford, director of physical education and this year's coach of the track team, said that the track squad was particularly lacking in distance runners.
