McKissick's
Adopted By
Continuation of the dormitory plan of p
'raternity housing was advocated by Ii
Pres. J. Rion McKissick in his annual ti
eport to the Board of trustees and was i:1
idopted for another year. it
Concerning this move, Pres. McKis- si
ick said: p
"Since the beginning of this session no J
nember or representative of either a fra- d
ernity or a sorority has complained to o
ne of the new plan. However, I have p
tnswered frankly and fully inquiries r
ibout the new system and the reasons
herefor from several national officers si
>f these organizations. I have explained
:o them that the new policy was adopted f
'o protect the moral reputation of the f
University and not to secure revenue by
requiring members of fraternities to live ii
n dormitories. f
"Last June I represented the Univer- 1
;ity at the centennial of the founding of u
Davidson College. I inspected the modi- p
ied fraternity houses undcr the system
wrevailing there. They are grouped to- a
;ether on land owned by the college. a
Eaci is a comfortable, spacious one-story
d
>uilding containing three rooms-living
-oom, chapter room, kitchen, in addition t
.o a toilet. No student is permitted to I s
reside there. T he houses differ some- '
vhat in architecture.
"This is the best plan of fraternity
tousing I have seen."

Proposals
Trustees
irt of South Carolina support the be
ef that popular indifference and hos
lity to us are steadily diminishing. This
stitution is increasingly projecting itself
to the life, thought, confidence, under
anding, good will, and service of our
:aple throughout the State. Governor
)hnston declared in a recent public ad
ress that he has observed that criticism
I and attacks upon the University, es
ecially from political sources, are now
irely, if ever, made.
The general condition of the Univer
ty is good.
Reports indicate that increasingly satis
ictory work is being (lone by students,
iculty and administrative staff.
Throughout the University is a grow
ig spirit of interest in and cooperation
>r the upbuilding of the institution.
'here is much wider, more sympathetic
nderstanding of the new policies and
roccdurcs.
One of the most helpful factors in our
dvancement is the increasing interest in
id appreciation of the University evi
enced by the people of Columbia, par
cularly the business men. A repre
:ntative expression was that of O. S.
iiiiman, 'ice-president ot the Columbia
ierchants' Association, at one of its
eetings earlier in the year when he as
rted that the University deserves the
hole-hearted support of this community,
iat it should have not fewer than 2,500
udents, and that it is to the interest of
ur merchants to aid this institution in
very possible way.
I believe that the greater number of
ur students are becoming more mature
i thought and action, more serious in
icir objectives while they are here, more
isposed to make the most of their edu
itional opportunities, than were their
'l lows in preceding generations.
