Meet Zephyrs Tonight
Flashing the same pep and enthusi
asni that has carried them to four vic
tories and no defeats in the 1937 sea
son, the Carolina freshman team
romped through a long practice ses
sion yesterday on Melton Field, in
preparation for their final game on
Friday night with the Furman fresh
men from Greenville. Coach Ted Pe
toskey put his charges through a stiff
dummy and signal drill with special
emphasis on blocking and tackling.
The hard-hitting forward wall of the
"Iron Men" will be intact for the Fur
man skirmish with the exception of
'im Bozard, 185 lb. center, who has
alternated at this key position with
Bill Mitchell. The eight other line
men, against whom the combined
might of Clemson and Citadel scored
only six first downs, two by rushing,
will he in top physical condition for
the Furman invasion. In this final
contest of their freshman year, the
Biddies will attempt to repeat the one
sided trouncing handed a great Fur
man outfit last year by the 1936 Caro
lina frosh.
In addition to a record of four vic
tories in which the Biddies have been
untied and unscored upon, the Caro
hna freshmen have chalked up a total
of 102 points against highly advertised
opposition. Against a fighting Citadel
team, the Gamecocks gained over
500 yards in runs and passes while their
great line held the Bullpups to a net
loss from scrimmage. Two blocked
kicks, both by Joe Patrone, diminutive
Carolina guard, are also included in
enviable record of the Birds.
Furman will bring a fast, well
coached squad to meet the Biddies in
the Friday night battle under the lights
of Melton Field and a Carolina vic
tory will stamp the fighting Game
cocks as the state champions. A large
attendance is expected to watch the
freshmen perform.
The Carolina "Iron Men" will pre
sent Ed Brown at left end, Alex Urban,
left tackle, Ollie Jones, left guard, Bill
Mitchell, center, Leo Kroto, right
guard, Joe Hatkovitch, right tackle,
Stanley Nowak, right end, Bill Mc
Callistcr, quarterback, Lucius Henson,
right halfback, Al Grygo, left half
back, and Dewitt Arrowsmith, full
back.

TO WILDCATS 27-7

Kentucky was the combination that de
feated the fighting University of South
Carolina Gamecocks, 27 to 7, in Lex
ington last week.
Three times in the second period the
Gamecocks drove down to the shadow
of the Kentucky goal posts and each
time failed to make the scoring play.
The lone Carolina score came late in
the last quarter as the climax of a 65
yard march. Captain Jack Lyon took
the ball the last five yards over right
tackle for the score. Tommy Lonchar
kicked the goal.
Outstanding for the winning Wild
cats was Bob Davis, who made beau
tiful runs of 63, 49, 45, 21, 17, and 15
yards. The Wildcats seemed to be on
the rebound after their crushing de
feat the week before by Alabama.
Lyon was the big ground gainer for
Carolina with 71 yards from the line of
scrimmage. Stroud picked up 33, Lon
char 29, and Robinson 19. Simpson
received passes for gains of 16 and 15
yards.

Furman hurricane is slated to strike
Columbia on November 13 in the Uni
versity stadium when they will meet
the Carolina Gamecocks at 3 o'clock
in a game that will have a direct ef
fect upon the state championship.
The Purple Paladians will enter the
game on even terms with the Game
cocks despite their loss to the Citadel
and Davidson. Carolina's poor show
ing against Clemson and their loss to
Kentucky caused their stock to drop.
Furman, 1936 champions, will meet
the Clemson Tigers on November 25th,
they being the lone team standing be
tween the Tigers and the state title.
The Hurricane, however, seems to have
the commanding wand over Clemson
that Clemson has over Carolina and
that Carolina has over the Citadel.
The Hurricane-Gamecock fray will
be Columbia College day in the cap
ital city. The sister institution will be
invited en masse to the game. They
will sit on the opposite side of the
field from the Garnet and Black root
ers and send back the cheers.
The Gamecock's loss to the Wild
cats of Kentucky was much closer
than the score indicates as both elevens
made 13 irst downs. The Gamecocks'
passing attack failed to click, and four
forward passes were dropped in the
end zones.
Reports from the Kentucky game
had Vincent Kelly, last season's regu
lar guard, playing but the flashes were
erroneous as the guard's knee injury
has put him on the sidelines for the
season, the injury being sustained in
the opening day's practice.
Van Edwards, Johnston junior, who
previously has seen most of his ser
vice while at the University of South
Carolina from the bench, will lead the
Gamecocks at the quarterback posi
tion.
