Pupils Enter
Competition Held To
Encourage Writing
Among Youth of State
Professor R. M. Stephen, director of
the University players, announced the
rules governing the one-act play writing
contest for high school students through
out the state this week. The contest
is being sponsored by the University
Players "to encourage the youth of South
Carolina to study and appreciate the his
torical, social, and folkway heritages, and
to interest themselves in the writing of
such material into dramatic and play
form."
The rules of the contest follow:
1. The contest is open to all high
school students.
2. Plays must be original.
3. While it is the desire of the Uni
veristy Players to encourage the crea
tive powers and develop the ability of the
contestants, the committee does feel that
the interested student should be allowed
to seek the advice and assistance of
teachers, patrons, and friends in produc
ing a worthwhile short play. At the
same time honesty and good judgment
would impel a student to submit no ma
terial that is not an outgrowth of his
own imagination and creative thinking
and ability.
4. Participants in the contest 'd
teachers are cautioned not to infringe
on copyrighted material.
5. Two or more students may be al
lowed to collaborate in the writing of the
play.
6. It is suggested that either the Eng
lish or History teachers of high school
set up a playwriters project in their
classes. All plays would be submitted
one week before the final date for the
contest, at which time selection could
be made of three plays from the schools
which shall he forwarded to the con
test chairman. In the event there is
no local elimination, each student's pro
duction may be forwarded to the con
test chairman.
7. Plays shall be one-act in length of
not less than 40 minutes nor more than
one hour playing time.
8. Stage directions need not be fully
given.
9. The play may be either comedy,
tragedy or drama.
10. Plots shall be woven around some
historical, traditional, or folkway story,
episode or tale concerning South Caro
lina or South Carolina people.
11. Play shall be clearly typewritten,
double-spaced, with one-inch margins on

size (8 and one-half inches-by 11) writ
ten on one side only and submitted flat.
12. Pages must be numbered and the
title of the play must appear at the top
of each page of the manuscript.
13. No copies or manuscripts will be
returned. All contributions become the
property of the University Players.
14. The decision of the judges shall
be final.
15. In judging the manuscripts of con
testants, the judges shall base their de
cision on plot construction, orderly ar
rangement and literary composition.
16. There shall be suitable prizes or
tokens of recognition awarded to the suc
cessful contestants and to their schools.
The prizes for authors shall have a value
for not less than ten dollars for first
place, five dollars for second place, and
three dollars for third place.
17. The three winning plays will be
presented during high school week by
the University Players.
18. The authors and their schools will
be publicly recognized at the perform
ance.
19. Manuscripts shall be sent first
class mail, sealed, to R. M. Stephan, Di
rector, University Players, University of
South Carolina, Columbia, South Caro
lina.
20. The contestant shall seal his name
and the name of his play in an envelope
which shall be included with the man
uscript. In no case will a manuscript
be considered when the name or any
other means of identification of the
writer shall appear on the pages of ie
manuscript.
