SPECULUM VItAE
By DINKY WILLIAMS
As 1 sit at my desk, my thoughts
wander back over the events of the
week. The copy that slides on my
desk helps refresh those memories.
Our city of Carolina with its picked
1500 students is alive. Here is life,
hate, love, dreams, sorrows, altru
iems, : nd life and life. Through a
haze of smoke we review these
students and their thoughts. They
pass before us but not in reality . .
no, almost as if seen in a mirror. Ah,
there is a title! The Mirror of Life
and better still, use the old Latin
phrase Speculum Vitae meaning the
same. And thus a name is born. And
thus a column is born. And thus life
is born . . . tn much the same man
ner.
'Tis written not in humor, yet
not in chilling seriousness. Neither
does it try to embody reforms or
correct maladjustments. No, it is
written for your entertainment, for
your consideration, for your further
ance. Our say has been said, our tale
told, so let us begin.
LIFTED LINES
There are meters of accent,
There are meters of tone,
But the best way to meter
is to meter alone.
There are letters of accent,
There are letters of tone,
But the beet way to letter
Is to letter alone.
A THOUGHT . .. Cheating is due
to an unlikeable professor, or a poor
and uninteresting lecturer, or an in
structor who gives extremely dif
ficult examinations on points un
stressed in class.
CAROLINES . . . How many
students know that the school they
are now attending has changed its
name no less than seven times since
its founding in 1801. It has been
known as South Carolina College on
three different occasions, the South
Carolina College of Agriculture and
Mechanics, and as the University of
South Carolina thrice.
MEMORY TIME . . . In years not
so long ago, classes under "Colonel"
McKissick. His c:yar, cigarettes with
their holders, and one of his favorite
jokes. To quote:
"It teems that a reporter had been
sent to cover a great mine disaster.
He war to impressed by all that he
saw that he tried to indicate all the
emotion and heroism that he saw
around him in that vast panorama
of dea'h.
"In a telegram which he sent to
his editor, he began:
'GOD SITS TONIGHT ON A
LITTLE HILL OVERLOOKING
THE SCENE OF DISASTER!
"His editor immediately wired
back: 'Never mind distaster--inter
view God,' and concluded with Get
picture if possible.'"
THINGS JUST LEARNED. .
That there are a group of books
hidden away in the University
library which the average student
never sees.- A . brief peep revealed
many o' the works.of William Faulk.
ner . . . that the University's Latin
motto. "Eriiolilt'mores nec sinit esse
feros," -means - "make . gentle the
character and. dogs. not allow. it to
be unrefined" . . . that the school's!
