Native Trees
Bird Refuge Planned
Due to the generosity of the Co- a
lumbia Sesqui-centennial promoters, c
the Alumni of the University of C
South Carolina have succeeded in d
securing lands adjacent to the Uni
versity for a garden.
Trees and shrubs native to South
Carolina will be grown here, with
the various plants labelled by botany
instructors.
The botany students of the Uni
versity, by having access to the gar
den, will have the advantage of
studying the plants in a natural set
ting.
Besides wooded shrubs and trees,
the garden will probably include a
small pond, where interesting water
plants will be grown, and around
which will be willows and cypress,
as well as other growths of the
South Carolina swamps and branches.
High hopes are held that the gar
den may also become a bird sanctu
- ary, and in order to encourage them
to nest her, food, as well as water
will be provided.
Interesting gates will be built and
trails laid out, to make various 1
plant groups easily accessible.
The garden clubs of South Caro
lina have expressed great interest
in this project and have promised
full cooperation.
