Gameco Track Team Tops Citadel State Meet Is Next In the last track meet before the State meet at Clinton, which begins today, Carolina's cindermen defeated Citadel at Charleston Saturday after noon of last week by a score of 87 to 45, while the Carolina freshmen, also competing with the Citadel frosh, won 64 to 52. Dick Little and Goody Taylor of Carolina each took three first places, while Lipscomb of Carolina won two firsts, a second and a third place. Morton of Citadel won two first places, coming in ahead of Carolina's distance men in the one and two mile events. Representatives from the University will begin competition in the State meet today. Preliminaries will be run off today, with finals in all events to morrow. Dick Little, Goody Taylor, and Guy Lipscomb are Carolina's main hopes in the meet. They have been the most consistent scorers on the track team this season. Little is expected to enter the dashes and the broad jump, while Lipscomb will be in the weight events and the high jump. After the State meet, the Gamecocks are scheduled to compete with Fur man in Columbia, and to enter the Southern Conference meet at Durham, N. C., on May 14-15. The Hurricanc casily fell before the onslaught of the racquet-teers, the Gamecocks taking six out of the seven matches of the afternoon. A match with Citadel, postponed from last Sat urday on account of rain, was tenta tively scheduled to be played on Wed nesday on the Carolina courts, but the Citadel team was unable to come back to play on that date. The Gamecocks went to Citadel yesterday to meet the "hell hops by the Ashley." Tomorrow they clash with Clemson here. In the match with Furman, Sam Daniel remained undefeated in the state by taking Turner Southern, Fur man's No. 1 man in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. In the second match, Dinky Wil liams of Carolina, formerly undefeated in the state this season, lost to Jim Aiken, 6-2, 6-2. Guy Lipscomb revengedl the defeat that he bad suffered at the hands of Mallory Smith of Furman in a pre viots match by taking his match 6-1, 6-0. Courtenay Carson, No. 4 man for Carolina, remained undefeated in the state by taking Bob Anders, 6-3, 8-6, while Louis Bryan of Carolina man aged to win in a long match against Gray of Furman, 10-8, 11-9. In the doubles, Carolina camne out unscratched, Daniel and WVilliams tak ing Aiken and Oswald, 6-2, 7-5, and Lipscomb and Carson winning over Smith and Anders, 10-8, 6-0. With the contest all tied up at three all in the fourth inning the Biddies put on a heavy attack that netted three tallies. First baseman Frank Makovic sent a single out to left field. A base knock down the foul line by Whitey Cope sent Makovic to second. After C. E. Moore went down on strikes, George Zuckerman, center fielder, lined a home run into the left field corner, scoring Makovic and Cope ahead of him. Herb Stroud, Biddy second sacker, slammed out two temendous triples in 'st two up a fast grounder a .o Gene Rob inson at third base to force the Sport er's runner for the final out. Fred Craft, Carolina frosh coach, shifted the lineup for this encounter, sending Robert Snider to first base, moving Makovic to the right field post, and placing Whitey Cope behind the plate. C. E. Moore went the entire route for Carolina and turned in a splendid performance, limiting the mill.boys to four bingles. Moore p. --U. s. 0. - Luck Follows Bird Netters When Earl Asbill, 12-year old mas cot of the tennis team, lost the lucky four leaf clover that he had found, ill luck immediately pounced upon, the squad. Facing the Citadel, Carolina's team was beset by handicaps. First, Sam Daniel, No. 1 man for the Gamecocks, was suffering from a twisted ankle, which he had injured the day before. Next, Guy Lipscomb, mainstay of the team in the upper rungs of the ranking ladder, was ab sent. Last, Carolina was heavily fav ored to wini by a large margin, but for some reason was rapidly losing the twvo matches that had started. Rain saved the day, perhaps, by stopping play before either of the first two matches had been completed. That same four leaf clover seemed to turn the tide in a match between Dinky Williams and an opponent from Furman. Williams was losing in he third set, when young Asbill came upon the charm. From that moment, Williams started a comeback, and wvon the match, and Earl Asbill became the mascot of the team. Other superstitions are religiously observed by the members of the squad. Never, never do they walk around op posite sides of a tree or post. Why? It's bad luck, they say. One team member always calls "rough" when a racket is spun for choice of sides. He has observed this superstition for sev eral years, he says. Anothej- believes that it is bad luck to jump over the net when changing sides in a match. Of course, it's always bad luck to play a match in clean pants. Perhaps, if the netters were not striv ing for another state title, they would not be so superstitious, but since they are, they are taking no chances on Lady Luck's deserting them. Oh, yes. The mascot promises to find another four leaf clover to re place the lost one before the match with Clemson tomorrow. --o. 3. 0.
