-A Possible Answer

no one's enemies. These people want
nothing but their homes and peace.
They are too dazed and weak to fight
anyone. Surely you can allow them
to go with me away where they may
recover from their losses and try to
become happy once more."
The lieutenant laughed curtly, "Ah,
little father, but it is so very impos
sible. They have lost but soon shall
suffer no more. You shall go with
them. Comfort them if you can"
he leaned close-"for it will be even
hotter there than it is in this cursed
sunt" He wheeled and strode away,
rattling his saber and bawling orders
in a coleric tenor. Father Gonzalez
stood, his face blanched, then turned
to his people and talked to them in
a small voice.
Quickly a gun was placed by two
sweating soldiers who made a great
fuss and clatter of equipment over it.
A long belt, heavy with brass shells,
was fitted to the gun. The man at the
trips drew back the arming lever, and
spat unconcernedly. He looked at the
officer who stood smoking a cigarette
and watching the proceedings with
evident relish. It was a' old story
and he had grown to enjoy it. He
always obeyed orders and General
Varonsky, the Russian attache', had
decreed to stamp out the opposition.
This El Captain Varga took pride
in doing.
Father Gonzalez, his back still to
the gun, spoke to the panicky cap
tives. His words calmed then some
what but one badly wounded young
rifleman, crazed by his pain, broke
from the group and ran. A shot
tumbled him headlong.
Then, hearing the snick of the ma
chine gun's hammer, Father Gonzalez
began to pray, his voice fervent and
fearless. Behind him. the lieutenant
smiled sardonically, flipped away his
cigarette, and gave a sharp command.
The priest stiffened but his intonations
did not waver. He heard the hellish
racket of the gun burst forth, a woman
on the edge of the group before him
screamed and collapsed; a man at her
side cursed, grasped his middle, and
slowly bent over; a terrific blow
struck Father Gonzalez between the
shoulders and shoved him forward
viciously. He fell heavily on his face.
The lead shrieked over his head,
smashing into ,its howling target of
flesh.
As the pounding gun suddenly
ceased its chatter, Father Gonzalez
turned onto his back. A dull pain
wracked him. He felt unbelievably
heavy. The effort of movement was
too much for him and he lay staring
up at the sun. The bright rays were
abruptly blotted out and the dying
priest saw the blurred face of the
lieutenant grinning down at him. He
tried to speak, but something down
inside stopped his throat.
"Does it hurt, little father?" the of
ficer asked; the voice was far away.
Father Gonzalez just lay and stared
up at him, his lips tight with pain,
his brain fast waning but still alive
with the thought, "How can all this
end?"
The answer came as the lieutenant
drew his pistol, held it quite close to
the dying man's head and fired. As
his world burst in a halo of flame,
Father Gonzalez knew.
