Clemson defeated the Carolina track
team at Clemsdn on April 17 by a score
of 79 to 47. Dick Little of Carolina
'tied with Bob Carter of Clemson for
high scoring honors in the meet. Each
had 15 points.
The next meet for the Gamecocks is

Citadel in Charleston.

three state teams, and came out with
three victories. Furman was first, the
match being played in Columbia. The
score was 5 to 2. On the following
Monday, the racketeers went to P. C.
to take the match there by a count of
8 to i, and then returning home the
team defeated Wofford 6 to 1.

lina, Guy Lipscomb lost to Mallory
Smith of Furman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and
Randolph Bradham, No. 5, lost to Os

6-1, 6-2. Bradham of Carolina de
feated Gray, 6-2, 6-1.
In the doubles contests, Daniel and
WVilliams won over Beatty and Par
ham, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The second doubles
match was won l)y Carson and Brad
hanm of Carolina, over WVoodward and
Stow.U, 6-3, 6-4. The third doubles
Kappa Sigs were leading, 15-13. Dearth
made a free throw good, raising the
score to 15-14. Louis Bryan of the
Kappa Sigs sank a one arm push shot
from the circle. Therrill of Sigma Chi
dlrib)bled one in that counted. Ryder,
his teammate, evened the score with a
foul shot, at 17 all.
This was the nearest the Sigma Chis
ever came to forging ahead.
The Kappa' Sigs imnnediately got
ten points before their opponents could
score another one. This lead was
never overcome.
In the closing minutes Kappa Sigma
sent in an entirely new team but it was
only a gesture as the game ended be
fore nnything could happen.

Wins Three
Continuing South Carolina's winning
streak in minor sports, the golf team
decisively defeated Presbyterian Col
lege early in the week at Clinton, 14 1-2
to 3 1-2.
The Gamecocks were led by long
driving Pat Tobias who turned in a 73.
Woodward and Stowell of P. C., were
defeated at the hands of Tobias and
Bruner. Tobias defeated Woodward,
2 to 1, and Bruner won from Stowell,
3 to 0.
In the second foursome, Leland Dc
Loach of Carolina closed out Bill Gil
more, 3 to 0. Steele Caldwell was de
feated by Heyward Fouche of Caro
line, 2 1-2 to 1-2.
Saturday, the Wake Forest golfers
fell before Carolina's championship
bound team. The Birds swamped
Wake Forest, 14 1-2 to 3 1-2. Bob
Bruner of Carolina was low man with
a 76. The match was played at the
Forest Lake Club.
On Friday of last week another op
ponent was crushed l)y the Carolina
golfers when Furman finished the
match with the little end of the score
15 to 3. This time Pat Tobias turned
in the low score on the Forest Lake
course, a 76.
One loss marred the weeks record.
On Tuesday, the Davidson team won
12 to 6. McCelland of Davidson was
low man with a 78. Low man for Car
olina was Tobias with a 79.
Today, at Clemson, the linksters are
having a match with that institution.
Bob Lahay is making the trip with the
team and will play against Clemson.

Carson. won over Garvin and Snider,

Frosh Lick Varsity
Backed by the stellar hurling of
Eugene Warner, the Biddies' baseball
nine trounced the South Carolina Var
sity team by the score of 10-5 last
Wednesday at Melton field.
Coach Stamman's boys held the lead
until Robert Snider, frosh catcher,
poled a long home run over the left
field fence, scoring two runners ahead
of him.
The freshman sewed up the ball
game in the first half of the seventh in
ning, slapping the offerings of Capers
McCravey to all corners of the field.
Wamner went the entire route for
the Biddies, getting in trouble only
when the wind played havoc with the
ball. For the Varsity, Coach Stain
man sent Louis Tabor, Oliver Wolfe,
and Capers McCravey to the mound in
the futile attempt to halt the on
slaught of the freshmen.

Clary, Carolina first baseman, slammed

hometown batters. Wilburn Ciary,
Banjo Williams, Big Durham, and Van
Edwards each collected two bingles
apiece. On the mound for the Stam
manmen was Oliver Wolfe, who al
lowed the Wofford batters ten hits. A
crowd of nearly a thousand spectators
was thrilled by the performance of Nub
Gosnell, one-armed athlete, who played
left field for the visitors in the late in
nings of the game. When he cracked
out a single, the crowd vent wild. One

was executed by Carolina in the ninth
inning. Wilbur Clary, Van Edwards,
and Ed Clary, all having a hand in the

Coach Chick Galloway's Presby
terian College nine inflicted the sec
ond defeat to Carolina last Monday,
the final score being 8 to 5. The Blue
I-Lose utilized hits, errors by Carolina,
and free passes to score three tallies in
the first inning and five in the second.
Two runs were forced in when Capers
McCravey walked two men with the
bases loaded. Big guns for the Game
cock in this lost venture were Bernie
James, Pinhead Henson, Banjo Vil
liams, and Van Edwards. The eleven
Gamecock bingles could not overcome
the heavy lead.
'The next schedule contest is against
Furman at home next Saturday. Coach
Stamman will send Oliver \Volfe to
the mound to halt the Hurricane.
Erskine's loss to the weak Clemson
team altered the situation in the Pal
metto league.
