Williams Gets Gittman Meda Rex Williams, Iardeeville, has be( named this year's winner of the Git man medal, emblem of high sport manship, boxing improvement, ar campuc leadership. Williams is a junior in the school arts and sciences at the University at has been active in athletics since ente ing Caruliina. Wednesday night, when - it became a certainty that the money to send Frank Jenkins and Rex Wil liams to California had been raised. Enthusiastic response to the Athletic Night program by students and citi zens of Columbia assured the success of the campaign to raise $500 to send Jenkins and Villiams to the National Collegiate boxing tournament at Sac h ramento, California, to be held April 1, 2, and 3. With $30o already raised, and an ad h vance ticket sale that netted another good amount, the $125 that was taken e at the gate raised the funds past the s, necessary amount, and made it a cer >r tainty that the two fighters would en >r train for the tournament on March 26. Henry Westbrook and hi student orchestra furnished the m sic for the occasion. Jenkins and Williams were outstand ing contenders at the recent Souther Conference tournament at Colleg Park, Md. Jenkins won the title i the batamweight class, but William came just short of a title when h lost a close decision to Max Novic in the middleweight class. Jenkir was also voted the outstanding box< of the tournament by coaches at ti tournament. Jenkins and Williams will go b train to the tournament, leaving o March 26. They will go to the We by the northern route, and will retur by the southern route, thus gettin an opportunity to see something < the country, as well as the chance c entering a National tournament. Y. Vagener at the sec r ond meeting of the Gamecock net squad. First place in the see(ings went to captain Sam 1)aniel, who held that position last year also. In the No. 2 position was placed Guy Lipscomb, former Columbia High star player, and a regular on the Carolina team last year. Francis "Dinky" Williams was ranked in third place. He and Daniel last year captured' the state collegiate doubles title. In fourth place was - Louis Bryan, former city champion of Sumter, and a veteran of last year's t team. - The freshman squad of last season s contributed the next ranking player, t Randolph Bradham. He was put in :1 fifth place, with Courtenay Carson in h sixth and Harold Prince in seventh s place. Both of these men saw service y on the freshman squad last season. Harper Welborn and Fritz Turner e were in ninth and tenth places, respec tively. e For the past two years the Carolina S tennis team has won the State cham - pionship, and is expected to take the e title again this year. s New nets have been ordered for the - varsity courts to replace the old ones, which are worn out. Also, several s drums of calcium chloride have been d purchased to put on the surfaces of the courts to lay the dust and improve the playing surface. Stands will be built on the west side of the courts to take care of spectators who may wish to see o the matches, Coach Wagener an d nounced. d Mr. \V. H. Harth, athletic director, announced that if the team won the state championship, the payers will be n given either gold tennis balls for watch charms or sweaters on which to wear Y their block "C's".
