Carolina
BY SPRUCE WHITE
The other day, a friend of ours met his
lost rib, (at least that is what he says).
Now we don't know, but this is his de
scription of her:
"She house for herself, at least, an
apartment. She cooks all her meals, even
lunch. She works as a stenographer all
day and comes home at night to tidy
up the house. One night last week, I
dated her and when I arrived, she had
supper on the table. Of course, I was
invited to eat. After supper she made
me help with the dishes. After cleaning
up, we started out to see a show. She
would not let me call a cab but insisted
on walking, even as cold as it was. She
would not go to the Carolina, saying
that that show would be back in a month
at a cheaper price. After seeing the
cheapest picture in town, she again re
fused a cab and when I suggested the
drug store, she immediately turned it
down saying that there was coffee and
lots of things at home to make sand
wiches. On top of that she has the
prettiest brown eyes, and pearly white
teeth that are perfectly even and matched.
--Aw, she's just a honey."
We're just hoping that if all he says
is true, she's soon going to kick him and
give us a chance. We certainly can't
find one of that calibre around this in
stitution.
There is a certain species of homo
which has invaded our fair campus in
the last couple of weeks. It is charac
terized by broad smiles, flaming bow
ties, ready handshakes, loud hats, and
back slapping. It walks by day and
quite frequently at night. It is usually
seen offering to some unsuspecting person
a cigarette, or pleasantly running after
some ladies hat. It is one of the most
loquacious of this genus that has ever
been reported. No place on the campus,
even the Woman's Building or the soror
ity houses, is devoid of them. It very
greatly resembles the more ordinary ones
of this genus. We have not been able
to completely identify it, but with the
help of all the biology keys, we have
come to the conclusion that it is most
commonly known as "Candidatus poli
ticanus."

Expert Speaks
To Clariosophic
Next Tuesday Night
Joint Meeting Of Clariosolihic And
Hypatian To Be Occasion For
Unusual Event
Students at Carolina will have a chance
to hear a handwriting expert describe
some of the intricacies of his profession
when a man who has a column on the
analysis of handwriting in the Stale
comes to speak in the Clariosophic So
ciety hall next Tuesday night at 8 P. M.
This will be the occasion for the regu
lar joint meeting of the Clariosophic
and Ilypatian Societies, and all members
of both societies as wcll as all other stu
dents interested in hearing the address
are invited to attend.
Samples of handwriting will be taken
from those present and then the speaker
will analyze them and explain some of
the details of his work.
This is the first time that such an op
portunity has been offered Carolina stu
dents, and a large number are expected
to hear the address.

German College
Sends Invitation
An invitation to send a representa
tive to the 200th anniversary celebra
tion of the University of Goettingen in
Germany has been extended to the
University, according to Dean F. W.
Bradley, head of the German depart
ment.
The University of Goettingen, al
though not the oldest German Univer
sity, is one of the most noted. For the
first 75 years of its existence it was
powerful, but declined during the reign
of Napoleon and the wars of that time.
Since then it has begun a renaissance
and is now recognized as one of the
leading Universities of the World.
The invitation was sent Dean Brad
ley by the Rektor Magnificus of the
German University who holds prac
tically the same position as the presi
dent of an American University. How
ever, these German heads are elected
annually from the faculty members and
serve as temporary presiding officers.

Six Hundred
Broons Used
Annually By Janitors
Handle Is Notched To Prevent

Twice th
in
Six hundred brooms are purchased an- th
nually by the University for the janitors tir
in the dormitories, J. M. Cantey, mar- st<
shal, said yesterday. "c
The new brooms are given out to the ini
janitors only after the old ones are worn tir
out, and turned in. To prevent the broom to
from being used twice, its handle is nil
marked with a notch.
The old handles are sent to the car- th<
penter's shop where some of them are lie
used for replacing broken chair rungs. g
The secret of the towel racks in the on
new dormitory wings to Thornwell col- Jo
lege lies here. The old handles are made ha
into racks, painted and placed in the to
individual rooms. After the racks are
worn out, they are used for wood in
the furnace. (We don't know what be
comes of the ashes unless they are used pa
to lilt in holes around the campus). pr
One of the reasons for the large con- sa'
sumption of brooms is that the janitors
cut the strings which hold the straws
together. This tends to make the straw
spread out and clean a wider path with
each stroke. This lightens the sweeper's
work, but greatly shortens the broom's
useful life.
