a1OO Alur L Alumni News (CONTINUED FROM PAGE FOUR) The next speaker was Governor Olin D. Johnston, an alumnus of the Univer sity, having received both his M. A. and LL. B. degrees at this institution. Gov ernor Johnston told the alumni tlhat one way in which they could help the Uni versity was to help get worthy students to attend. He pointed out that a strong alumni association almost invaribly in dicated that it represented a strong uni versity. "If you can show me one col lege or university that does not have a strong alumni association, I will show you one that does not have a strong foot ball team" he added. We can do a great work as an organization, he told the several alumni gathered at the meeting, by getting behind the University and fur ther developing interest in the Alumni Association. He paid tribute to the work of Barney A. He called atten tion to the fact that in the history of this University the present alumni asso ciation was the only one that survived for more than three years at a time. "No one person" he said "can keep an organization alive, but organized effort can." He likewise paid tribute to the principles upon which interest in the Alumni Association has been built. A telegram from Dr. J. Rion Mc Kissick, expressing his regret at not be ing able to attend the Home-coming Day Exercises, was readl by Mr. Wright. Coach Don C. McCallister told the alumni that he realized the Gamecocks had lost some games that they should not have lost, but, at the same time, they had won sonme games they wvere not expectedl to win, Hie toldl them that the Univer sity "had a young coach with a young team andl that as we grow older we ex pect to improve." le thanked the alumni for their cooperation. Mr. Benet, re ferring to remarks by President \Vright hat he had lived in Columbia close to the University almost all of his life, told the alumni that it was true that he had lived near the University these many years, md that he was proud to say "the person nel of the student body and their con duct at the University are as fine as I have ever known." lie spoke of the progressiveness of the present. adminis tration and the growing interest of the State at large in the University. He told the alumni that, in order to have a grow ing alumni association, they should con tribute something in money and more in spirit to the upbuilding of the Uni versity. "We at the University should begin to build our students to take a greater part in national and international affairs." Penney, Professor of Biology at the University, and an alumnus of the University of North Carolina, introduced the following faculty and administrative officers of the University of North Caro lina: R.
