(ACP)-Peter Skalkos' re cent fortune sounds something on the order of the "Phil the Fiddler" type story that Horatio Alger, Jr. used to grind out. Not everyone, in fact very few uni versity students, can boast of changing from a college student to a high school principal in two months. Skalkos wvas gradluated from the Uni versity of Toledo in Junie andl received an appointment to the government high school in Las Marias, Puerto Rico, early this summer; lie assumed his duties on August 24, signing a one year contract for the position. "Everything is grand here," hc wvrites to a friend in Toledo, "except the ba nanas, wvhich are served at every meal in a variety of disguises. Gardenias line all the walks leading to the school." Whether or not it was "apple-polishing" Shalkos dloesn't know exactly, but on his first day as principal he mentioned that he was fond of horseback riding. The next day three of his pupils brought horses to school for his use. They told him that their fathers had reminded them that they must treat "El Americano" well. Poetic Expressions Cause Tremors San Francisco, Cal. (ACP)-From the land of earthquakes, California and more specifically from San Francisco, comes a new kind of tremor-a tremor that may some day tear apart the very foundation of the English language. It may sound funny to you, but it is a serious proposition with Lou Harrison, a former student at San Francisco State College, who is experimenting with a new type of poetic expression. It is based on the use of special verbs made from nouns and used in a verbal and often adverbal sense. "Road yourself....look lakely....love cliffly. ...hilI yourself." These are only a few illustrations Mr. Harrison offers. .n In Press Practices beard and moustache again. Cornelia Reamer saying that the professors in the French department "just can't be caught".... FOREIGN ATTACK - IS NOT IIKELY That the possibility of a successful attack on the United States from abroad is highly improbable was the opinion expressed by R. C. Bell, ex ecutive secretary of the University Y. M. C. A. and head of the student discussion groups, in a recent debate on war. Since the enemy would have to land a million men here in one body, estab lish quarters for them, secure food and ammunition before it could begin ac tual offensive fighting, American mil itary forces could be mobolized suf ficiently to check any advance.
