Against Boxers Report For Practice Light Session Now Many Football Players Expected To Try Out For Boxing Team Varsity boxing practice began Oc tober 12 under the direction of Frank DleMars. Although only a small number of candidates have reported for prac tice, the squad includes Harry Hilton, (captain), Rhea Haskell, John Haskell, and Rex Williams, who - fought for Carolina last year; Ben Joe Williams and Frank Urban, intra-mural winners last year, and Jerry Hughes, former frosh boxer. However, Hughes, Urban, and the two Williamses will not be able to work with the team till after football season. A few other football players are expected to try out for box ing, also. At present, the team is working into fighting condition with light exercises such as body-bending, running, jump ing rope, and punching the bag. Spar ring and heavier exercises will come later. Carolina has produced some ex cellent boxing teams in the past. The team of three years ago did not lose a meet during the season. And last year's though not a full team, included Frank Jenkins, Lorenzo Taylor, and Rex Williams, who were undefeated in this state. The heavy bags have already been hung in the gym, and new gloves, head gears, shorts, and warm-up pants, which have already been ordered, will be here soon. Medals Awarded Winning Boxers In Intra - Mural Bouts Medals to be awardedl to the wvinners of the Intra-Mural boxing tournament of 1936 have been received by the Physi cal Education Department. The cham pions and runners-up of the respective weight divisions may secure their awards by calling at Mr. Craivford's office in the gymnasium. Those receiving medals are: Octavius Anmato, Albert Greene, Carol Berman, Barney Beidleman, Leo Carleo, WVarner Webb, Joe Williams, Joe Belott, George H askell, Jerry Hughes, John Burns, Fritz Turner, Frank Urban, Sam Ruben, Vincent Kelly, and Art Urbanyi. *--DAT CLEMHOM"* NEW TYPE COURT TO B~E CONSTRUCTED Cement Clay Surface Under Rehabilitation Program Of South Carolina Highway Department A tennis court with a half-cement and half-clay surface is being con structed at the University, *Prof. R. L. Sumwalt recently announced. This project is being conducted un der the rehabilitation program of the South Carolina Highway department and will be the only court of its type in the state. Professor Sumwalt, who is in charge of the grading and survey ing, said that this construction is chiefly an experiment. John A. Chase, Jr., dean of adminis tration, announces that all of the Uni versity tennis courts will be worked over and resurfaced. 33AT 'aLL OUT o O 0 KMO-'" Twelve lettermen were lost by Neely, but these have been replaced by reserves' and sophomores who have shown them Clemso Eo CLARY Running Team To Be Formed By Carolina Students Director Crawford Explains Idea To Better Inform Students Of Various Ideas For the first time in several years, a Cross-Country Running team will be added to the sports program of the Uni versity, Jack Crawford, Director of Physical Education for men, announced this week. All candidates for team are asked to report to the gym on Tuesday, October 20th, at 4:45 p. m. In order that the plan and purpose of this new activity might not be miscon strued, Mr. Crawford issued the follow ing statement : "Most students think of cross-country as a distance race over hill and dale, run at top speed without any letup, thus making it appear as noth ing but drudgery. However, this is not the object we have in mind. I would like to have one hundred men who are inter ested in a recreation that is a wonderful means of developing for the entire body, especially the lungs. If this sport is properly supervised the individual can derive great health benefits from it be side enjoying himself." During the early part of the Spring semester a meet will be held to pick men for a varsity cross-country team which will compete in the various intercollegi ate events. Medals will be awarded to the runners who place in the first four positions. -OIVE EM EIILL GAMECOCKS Local Gridders In Majority On University Squad Thirty Players From Palmetto State Do Or Die For Carolina On Gridiron Thirty South Carolinians, 12 stu dents from Ohio, and representatives from Georgia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Michigan and New Jersey, make up the, University football squad. Seven are seniors, 15 juniors and 25 sophomores, making a total of 47 make up the squad.
