Stokes'Stutz
Finally Burns
lie was in his glory. So was his
(late. They were going to eat at a
swanky joint down town. He had a
couple of, pieces of folding money in
his pocket and there was a smile on
his face that reached from one ear to
the other and half way to the back of
his neck.
The car in which they rode was
only twelve summers oldl, but it was
still a good car, so he said. The only
trouble with it was that there was
no battery in it. But to this master
mind a little thing like a starter was
no bane. All he would have to do
when they went in the eating place was
to leave the hack running.
With this done, they entered the
cafeteria and consumed a hearty meal
potatoes, bread, water, and the cheap
est meat that could be bought. After
they had finished, they heard a flock
of fire trucks coming toward them.
"They hustled out the door in hopes of
seeing the approaching wagons.
"'Why, Stokess," said the girl. I be
lieve they are .oing to stop right in
front of your .ar."
"WVonder 11 we're going to get
it out the .y?"
"Why, it Acs like your car is on
fire."
"Let's see."
About this time four large trucks
stopped in front of the Stutz. There
was enough smoke coming out of the
engine of the car to fill the Yankee
Stadium. The firemen jumped from
their vehicles and pondered the ap
p'roach they were to make in extin
guishing the flame. One fellow on
the hook-and-ladder truck thought they
should cover the car with sand, an
other believed that putting chemicals
onl it would stop the smoke, while
others wanted to put water on the
job.
.About this time the chief drove up,
JumpeI)d out his car and ran over to
the smoking vehicle. He stuck his
hand through the door, cut off the
switch, and then yelled: "Let's go
Tlhe smoke stopped. Stokes Davis
started and his date followed. They
1)ushed their way through the crowd
that had assembled and left the car.
An hour later, they returned, cranked
the hack, and drove off.
Next day, Stokes was seen walking
his girl to another eating-place.
