The 1936 intramural boxing program
attracted a number of boxers, several
of whom were recruited into the var
3 sity squad.
Basketball and track were also in
* cluded on last years intramural pro
gram. Intramural football wvas played
here until two years ago, but the doc
tors advised against its continuance
because of the ill effects on the hearts
of players who might not be in good
condition. .However, Mr. Crawford
says he will institute intramural touch
football if there is any demand for it.

Pep Meetings
A pep meeting wil be held Fri
day night at 7:00 P. M. in the Uni
versity Chapel, in preparation ,for
the Duke game Saturday afternoon.
Leading the cheers will be Joe
Bird, Essie Davis, Martha Mauney,
Carter Porter, and Billy Spivey.
The 45-piece University band will
be present to play and talks will
be made by Coach Don McAllister,
the captain of the football team, and
some of the players.
Directly after the meeting, the
band will lead a shirttail parade
down Main St. as far as the Jeffer
son Hotel, where Carolina yells will
be given. The meeting will break
up there after the Alma Mater is
sung. .

Dearth is one of the leading back
field men on the Carolina squad. He
is a good runner and though he has
not carried the ball very often, he has
gained on every run. In the Erskine
game his one attempt netted *5 yards,
and against V. M. I. he carried the
ball once for 25 yards.
Tennis Courts
Put In Shape
Under the direction of John A.
Chase, Jr., Dean of Administration,
the University tennis courts are being
put into shape in order to give a
greater number of students an oppor
tunity for recreation.
Three courts have already been put
in first class order. The court behind
the law building was the first to be
fixed and then two of the four by Bur
ney College were completed. Work
is now going on on the third One there.
These courts have been leveled and
rid of all grass.
The two courts behind Flinn Hall
were destroyed two years ago when
that building was moved back to make
room for the World War Memorial.
These will not be replaced because
of the lack of space due to the new
students activities building that is be
img erected at the rear of Flinn Hall.
The varsity courts have not been dam
aged by the new east wing of Thorn
well College. One back stop has been
taken down but will be put up again
as soon as the building is finished.
These are the only ones that have been
bothered by the recent building activi
ty on the campus.
The courts in front of the Women's
Building are in worst condition of any
on the main campus but as soon as
the grass is removed they will be all
right. The faculty court has been kept
in a fair condition all summer.

Carolina and Duke have met on the
gridiron several times before. Their first
encounter was conceded to Duke, but the
Gamecocks turned back the highly-vaunt
cd Blue Davils and set them back on the
short end of a 22-0 scorL.
Their second meeting was when Wal
lace Wade first assumed his duties as
head mentor at Duke. Here in Colum
bia, Carolina, which numbered among its
team such stars as Earl Clary and Dick
Shinn, defeated them 7-0.
The last struggle was last year. The
result of that game was a 47-0 victory
for Duke.
This year's edition of the Blue Devils
has almost every man back from last
year's team. Leading the field with bids
for All-American berths are Ace Parker
and Elmore Hackney, backfield men
whose running has featured' all their
games this year.
Duke rose to its peak last week in
winning from the Colgate Red Raiders
6-0. Rose Bowl rumors, with the Duke
eleven playing the major role, have al
ready begun to circulate.
The passing combination of Hackney
to Parker has gained many yards this
year. Hackney excells in all three de
partments of the game, although Parker
has a slight edge on him in experience.
Backfield luminaries are not all that
the Duke team has. A hard-tackling and
fast-charging line keeps the opponents
;core from mounting very high.
Dick Taliaferro of Columbia is the
>utstanding wingman for the Blue Devils,
and Dan Hill, whose red hair makes him
easily visible on the field is a tower of
strength in the line.
The starting line-up for the Gamecocks
will be composed of Bob Johnson and
Frank Urban. ends; Pop Howell and Jack
Dorflinger, tackles; Paul Gaffney aiid
Vincent Kelly, guards ; John Burns, cen
ter. The backfield will be made up of
Ralph Dearth at quarter, Joe Williams
