Beauty Show Is Presented Varied Program Given M. Scarborough, H. Warren And E. Anderson Are Chosen From 23 Contestants By Mary Belle Higgins Resembling a spring fashion show in the swanky Woldorf-Astoria, Carolina's annual pageant for the selection of can didates for May Queen was staged in a riot of beauty and color Monday night. Elizabeth Anderson, Maxine Scarbor ough, and IHamilton Warren were chosen from a bevy of 24 campus beauties. Judges of the contest were: Mrs. Mar ion Rufus, Florence; Mrs. Kit McMas ter, Winnshoro; and Mrs. W. D. Magin iss, Rock Ilill. The three were selected by )ean Arney R. Childs. Before a background of white drop and green palms, the girls, who were chosen, by their respective sorority, and non-sorority groups, appeared first in sports and then in evening dress. Mary and Lee Lorick, (liked in white sateen page outfits, displayed placards bearing each contestant's iumber as she appeared. Miss Anderson's sport ensemble was of beige with matching accessories. For evening, she chose a flowered taffeta made with a long tunic and a cluster of flowers at the throat. Miss Scarborough's sport dress was white, worn with a short Kelly green jacket, picture hat, sandals, gloves, and purse. Ilcr evening gown was a long sleeved rose-beige net. For sports, Miss Warren wore apua with matching hat and accessories of white. Her choice for evening was emer ald green morey with a jacket of the same material clipped together at the waist with brilliant rhinestone buckles. A variety program with J. Spot Mo 7inni a? master nf ceremonies and Sam my Cartledge as general handman and stooge was presented along with the con test. Dr. Leonard T. Baker opened the even ing's entertainment with a short address followed by a selection from the orches tra under the direction of Bill Spivey. The program follows: Tap dance and song by Sylvia Stern and Johnnie Campbell in black and white outfits of white ties and tails. Black-face- skit by Creighton Spivey and Sally Crouch. Rhythm trio with piano, violin and guitar by Bill Ost, Bill Norton and Bill Spivey. Tap dance by Judson Moore (upon the request of J. Spot that somebody show that politicians can do things other than politics. Singing trio composed of Francis Mc Leod, Edith Nicholson, and Margaret Wardlaw. Song and dance by little Irene Stern. Sylvia Stern in her own interpreta tion of the Modern dance which was performed under a purple light. Cross section of college life to Master Mozingo's owvn rhyme. Four Students Ill This Week Confined To Infirmary Fifty Calls Are Made Each Day For Treatment Of Various Ills Only four students have been confined in the University infirmary during the past week, it was announced by Mrs. Addie Madden, matron in charge of the infirmary. These four students are: Rosa Wilder who has been confined with the measles. Woodrow \Vilson, mumps, Jerry IHughes, indisposed, R. P. Tallman, Jr., ear con dition. About fifty office calls are made per day for treatments of various ills, it was announced. -U. A. 0. Quintilian Club Gives Bridge Party Tuesday The Quintilian Club, honorary educa tion sorority, is sponsoring a benefit bridge at the University high school, Tuesday evening, April 28, at 8 o'clock. Tables will be arranged for both con tract and auction. Proceeds will be used to buy books for the school of edu cation library. Admission will be 25c. -U. e. o. ger. Jennie Clarkson as the sorority girl wore a red blazer, giggled, hewed gum viciously and smoked. Paul Robe lot was the dignified Phi Beta Kappa. Hamilton Warren now leads the race with 295 votes and Maxine Scarborough runner-up with 285. Another election will come off soon to choose between these two candidates. The Beauty Pageant Monday It night from which the three can- a didates were chosen was a very brilliant affair. Many outsiders as well as Carolina students enjoyed the contest and the dances and other entertaining skits on the pro gram. ( The date for coronation has not been set yet. Busy Week Next week will be one of the most rushed and gayest weeks of the sea son. Three large affairs will take place on three consecutive nights. Wednesday night is the night of the A. T. 0. Banquet and dance to be followed Thursday night by the in terfraternity dance. The week will come to its great climax Friday even ing when Dlamas gives its annual rpring ball. Phi Sigma Kappa Dance This evening Phi Sigma Kappa gives its annual Founders Day banquet and dance at the Jeffer son Hotel. Sponsors for the dance include: Polly Pendleton, spon sor for Freeman Coggins, presi dent; Anne Donny, for Ewen Rob inson, vice-president; Maree Si neath for J. B. Bundrick, secre tary; Marjorie Collins, for Fred McIntosh, treasurer; and La Verne Hughes for O. L. Hogan. Bowery Ball Yesterday evening the Block "C" Club gave its annual bowery ball. The affair was danced in the gym which was appropriately decorated in Caro lina colors. T.he tests are being given in the Univer sity' lIigh Gyimasiumz, and LeConte and Sloan Colleges. All students who were ratedl as Sophomores in September or who have attained the rank of Sopha more since then are reqluiredl to take them. The General Culture test, numbering 810 items, contains sections devoted to history and social science, to literature, and to fine arts. The General Science tests include general scientific informa-I tion, meteorology, biology, physics, chem istry, astronomy, and geology.
