SEVENTH WIN
With Six Consecutive State Vic
tories, Gamecocks Will Face
Formidable State Opponents
Carolina's tennis team which is un
defeated in the State race kept their
slate clean this week by winning from
Clemson by forfeit and whipping P. C.
in Columbia, 5 to 2.
These victories give the Gamecock
netmen six consecutive State victories
and puts them on top of the pile. They
are the heavy favorites to retain in
the State championship won last year.
Tomorrow the netters will journey
to Greenville where they will meet
Furman, their most formidable foe
in the State race. Furman was de
feated in Columbia 3 matches to 2
when darkness caused a postponement
of the match on April 4. If Carolina
wins this match, she will have only
two matches with Citadel between her
and the State championship.
The squad is made up of Sam Dan
iel, No. 1 man who has not been de
feated in State competition this sea
son, having met the best every col
lege has had to put out except the
Citadel who will be played next week.
Guy Lipscomb, the second man on
the team, is also undefeated in the
State this season. He has made a
letter in basketball already this sea
son and is now making one in track :
as well as tennis. E
Wesley Walker, No. 3 man and cap- C
tain of the 19:to aggregation, has only S
been defeated twice this year and has -
done much toward holding the team
intact.
Dinky Williams, the fourth man, has
been defeated three times but like
Walker, has not lost a double match.

so still undefeated in the State al
though he has come out on the wrong
end of the score in double miuatche s.
John Hussey. playing No. 6 for most
of the season, has added valuable
points to the team's total.
Bills' Brooker, Joe Walker and t
Louis Bryan are still battling for po
sitions on the team. In fact, Brooker r
upset Hussey in a three set match
this week and earned the right to play 9
in the sixth position against Furman. ~
Coach E. Y. WVagner appeared pes
simist ic over the Hird's chances against
Fturman. Hie p)ointed out that Fur
man is famuous for startling upsets
over their opponents in Greenville. Be
cause of the fine record made so farY
this season, Coach WVagner has
awardled each member of the team a
jacket.
