Bird Track Me At Ch Win Individual Honors Campbell And Epps Are Star Per formers For Bird Cinder. men Carolina in Southern Conference Indoor Track meet held at Chapel Hill last Saturday made a good show ing although the meet was won by Duke with little effort. Topping the individual performances for Carolina was that of George Epps, ace sprinter. Epps turned in the best time in the Southern Conference for the 60 yard dash. He was clocked in 4.4 seconds in his second qualifying race, which is one-tenth of a second more than the Conference record for that event. The final was won by Shehan of Duke. in 6.5 seconds, in which Epps placed a close third. Next outstanding was the 70 yard high hurdles victory by Johnny Camp bell, freshman quarter miler and sprinter. The dimutive track star won his qualifying heats and finished going away in the final. He showed excellent form and good speed, even though it was his first high hurdle race. Pettit ran good qualifying races in the high and low hurdle races but failed to repeat his performances in the finals. The short 60 yard dash proved en tirely too short for the speedy Dick Little, who seemed never to be able to get started. He qualified for the finals and in all his races finished gaining speed, but not able to regain the distance he lost at the start. -v. a. u. Professor Speaks To Strange Group No doubt similar episodes to this have often -happened in colleges, but it's still good. A Harvard phychology professor recently stamped into a first hour class, threw down his notes and began to lecture. Rapidly, concisely, rising his best witticisms he talked for 15 minutes. Then he stopped. "Any questions?" he asked. There were none. So he began to ask questions of this student and that. None of them could answer. "Good Lord!" he burst out finally, "have I spent this whole semester for nothing? Don't you know a blessed thing about this course?" And a brave boy raised his hand and said, "No, sir. This is a class in the 18th century prose." -U. s. 0. G. W. C. Sororities Banned By Council Sororities at Greenville Woman's College will be disbanded in the near future, it was decided by a vote of forty to ten at a special meeting of all members of the G. W. C. Pan-Hel lenic Council last Thursday night. The vote came after discussion of the proposed disbanment by the va rious members of the council and a presentation of a short history of the Pan-Hellenic world by Miss Virginia Thomas, dean of the college. Sororities were formed in order to provide congenial groups and more attractive living quarters than the dor mitories at the period, Miss Thomas pointed out. The college dean also stated that the modern trend is away from sororities. Many of the larger colleges such as Smith, Bryn Mawr and Rollins have now abolished soror ities since the need for them has gone, she added. -u. g. a. Y.W. Gives Program At Newberry_College The Y. W. C. A. of the University sent a group of girls to put on a Ves per's program at Newberry College, Tuesday night. The program has as its theme "Friendship," and consisted of the following: Scripture reading and prayer, led by Ann Jones; "A Friend," by Sarah Rector; and "Christ, the Greatest Friend," by Edith Wright. The-meet ing was presided over by Lodema "Dink" Gaines. Young Defeats Bryan For Oratorical Honors Sid Young, a sophomore in the school of Art and Sciences, Tuesday night was chosen as the University's representative to compete in the State Inter-collegiate Oratorical contest to be held in Aiken, April 3. Young defeated G. Werber Bryan for the post. The contest was held in the Clariosophic Literary society hall. -a. e. 0.
