BOW TO WOFFORD,

Mitchell's Loss Fell
Victory Over Furman Places Bird
In Tie With Wofford For
Second Place Honors
Carolina's basketball team went dowr
in defeat Saturday night by losing tc
Wofford, 32 to 19.
The Gamecocks were without the ser
vices of Reddy Mitchell, diminuitive for
ward who has been playing a bang 'up
game all season but now has influenza
Captain Bernard James played part of
;the game with an injured ankle.
The Terriers had suffered four suc
cessive defeats and were ready to take it
out on the Birds who were also in low
spirits because of their loss of twc
Southern Conference tilts to Clemson and
N. C. State.
Monday night Carolina met Furman ir
the Field House to play off the game thal
was called off earlier in the month be
cause of the lights going out.
After a slow first half the Birds cam<
back to win by one point, 94 to 33. Wher
the half ended Furman was leading 22-12
and everyone was about ready to concgde
them the victory as Carolina had sunk
only one goal and ten fouls.
Between the halves Coach Ted Petoskey
shifted up his team and sent in a com
bination composed of two regulars, Guy
Lipscomb and Goodie Taylor, and three
subs, Jack Lyons, Willis Cantey, and Bill
Simpson.
In the second half the Gamecocks came
back with a flurry of baskets and the best
defense they have shown this season. They
soon passed the Hurricane and held the
lead the rest of the game.
Taylor was high scorer making three
field goals and seven fouls for a total of
thirteen points. He played his usual good
defensive game and did his best ofensive
work of this season. Lipscomb and
Cantey, sophomores, also played well in
the second half.

Yale Paper
Century Old
Known As Guardian
ILiterary Sheet Has Preserved
Traditions Of Famous College
For More Than. 100 Years
New Haven, Conn. (ACP)-The oldest
magazine in America, the Yale Literary
Magazine, last Saturday (Feb. 22) cele
brated the 100th anniversary.of its birth.
The guardian of Yale traditions during
the century since its founding in 1836, the
"Lit" has seen many rival publications on
the campus rise to glory and quickly fall
into oblivion. During its entire existence,
the magazine has not changed its form,
except in 1932 when its cover was
switched from brown to blue, a change
that called forth such a storm of protest
that the original color was readopted the
following year.
The anniversary issue of the Lit con
tains articles by former editors and con
tributors who have since become famous,
including Sinclair Lewis, Stephen Vin
cent Binet, Thornton Wilder, Philip
Barry and William Lyon Phelps.
Joel Kelley Presents
Another Brain-Child
Passing through the years may be
Quickly, yet tenderly,
Or smashing like a stream at flood
To hasten up the boiling blood
Of patriots and hearts carefree
Ah, but 'tis a sight to see 1
Smiling here and frowniiug there
With now a joy and then a care;
Laughing at some foolish joke
With senseless thought which yet awoke
I A feeling like unto a s*an
Swiris and stops, and then is gone.
Ah I The heart is not within the breast
Wherein it is supposed to rest;
'Tis lingering at some other spot
Which in the soul is ne'er forgot
Like some small dream which came and
passed
'Twill never leave-'tis anchored fast.
A moonlight night to send a beam
Into the heart to start a dream:
A castle built up to the sky
Far beyond reach of the human eye
To tower high in all its worth
Alas I It must crash down to earth.
Slashing waves all wreathed in spray
Roll on the shore but cannot stay ;
'Tis like some souls cast from its home
And left to wander and to roam
O'er all the world-ne'er seeking rest
Always on some other quest.
Cut and slashed by all mankind
A softer life is hard to find;
At last in calm and peaceful sleep
The soul goes from the flesh to keep
A sojourn with Almighty God
In peace at last from the life it trod.
Editor's note: Our budding poet, Joel
Kelly, has gone serious on us, but don't
mind that, he means it.

I, too, an arrow shot
And reckoned not its flight.
Its target was no spot
That I could mark-'twas night.
An arrow made of flames
Ambition bred
While darkness breathed the names
Of honored dead.
The names of dead whose shaft
Had fo'ind a spot
Amidst the honor-roll
That fame begot.
My arrow sped away....
Its flame, though bright,
Was smothered where it lay
Concealed by night.
Ah, me... .perhaps 'tis better so
And well
That this alone I know :
It fell !
