Virginia Military Institute will meet
Carolina at 8:00 o'clock tomorrow night
in the University Field House in the last
basketball game of the season.
This contest will decide Carolina's final
place in the Southern Conference race.
It will have no effect on the bids to the
conference tournament, as invitations will
be sent out before the game is played.
If the conference officials consider the
Carolina team better than V. P. I., the
Gamecocks will go to the tournament.
While V. P. I. has won only one game out
of ten, the Birds have lost several of their
important games by only small margins.
The contest with North Carolina last
year's champions, ended up 43-40; the
game with Clemson, state-title holders,
came out 31-30. V. P. I. has defeated
only the Virginia Cadets.
The Gamecocks will enter this game
without the services of Reddy Mitchell,
stellar forward who has been out for the
past week with the flu. Bill Simpson, who
helped stem the tide against Furman, or
Jack Lyon will take his place. Goody
Taylor, Guy Lipscomb, and Bernard
James will complete the line-up.
This game will be the first meeting of
the two schools since the Cavalier grid
sters lost to the Gamecocks 22-6 in the
dedication of the new Carolina stadium.

Tracksters Will Meet
West Virginia In April
The University of West Virginia has
recently written the University asking
for a track meet with Carolina to be held
here sometime eai ly in Ail. A final de
cision has not been reached as yet, but
every indication points toward a meet
with West Virginia here. A tentative
(late, April 8, has been set, which is the
Thursday before the Wofford meet.
Coach Frank Pauly wishes to offer
again an invitation to all who are inter
ested in track or any who would like to
try and see what they can do in track to
come out for the team. There are plenty
ut uniforms and anyone who wants an
outfit can get one at the Field Hiouse.

Tennis Squad
To Meet Today
With work being pushed on the con
ditioning of the varsity courts behind
DeSaussure college, the tennis team is
rapidly revolving into an actuality with
the tennis candidates holding daily work
outs prior to the regular practices which
will be begun as soon as the courts are
finished.
A meeting of all the candidates for the
squad will. be held this afternoon at 2:30
in Prof. Yeaton Wagner's office in Davis
college. Much importance is being con
nected with this meeting but as yet, noth
ing is known as to what the session will
be held about.
Around fifteen men have already an
nounced their intentions of reporting for
the squad and more are expected out be
fore actual practice begins.
The team is fortunate this season in
securing the services of Prof. Wagner,
who besides being a veteran player him
self, has attended Wash. and Lee where
he secured much instructions on the art
of tennis playing.
One of the best schedules in history is
being arranged and many trips will be
taken by the team.
Much red tape remains before the as
surance of letters for the members of
the team can he assured but Coach

kell Represent Carolina
Four Carolina pugilists, accompanied
by Coach DeMars and their manager, ar
rived yesterday at Charlottesville, Vir
ginia, to represent the Gamecocks in the
Southern Conference boxing tournament
which begins today.
Captain Nut Taylor, Frank Jenkins,
Rex Williams, and Rhea Haskell are the
Carolina representatives. All except
Captain Taylor who advanced as far as
the semi-finals fast year, will receive their
baptism of fire in tournament competition
today.
Captain Taylor, fighting in the 115 lb.
class, .was out much of the season with a
broken nose. He is undefeated this season
with a record of two victories and one
draw.
Jenkins, a sophomore, is state champion
in his weight. Jenkins is undefeated in
two years of competition (on the fresh
man and varsity team). He fought Diehl
of N. C., conference champion to a draw.
Jenkins is one of the favorites to win
the 125 lb. crown.
Rex Williams, also a soph, is state
middleweight champion. Williams lost his
first fight to W. Mann, conference cham
pion from Duke, and Rex has been un
defeated ever since. He will be out for
revenge at Charlottesville.
Rhea Haskell, a senior, came out in
midseason and filled a vacant spot at light
heavyweight. Haskell lost to Kissam of
Clemson and to Costello of Citadel ,but
has shown so much improvement that
Coach DeMars decided to enter him in
the tournament. All Rhea wants is another
crack at Kissam.
The team was greatly weakened by the
loss of Harry Hilton in the tournament
due to the flu. However, Carolina has
sent up four potential champions and some
of them, if only one, ought to come
through.
John Haskell, varsity welterweight,
also will not fight though he will make
the trip for experience. Other varsity men
not fighting in the tournament are Sam
Cartledge and Gilbert Colina, light
weighq, Jim Ackerman, junior middle
weight, and Mackey Mills, heavyweight.
