K. Fos ter, physical director of Carolina. The intense interest being shown over the Furman-Clemson game 'on November 28, the original date for the clash in Columbia, was the reason given by officials for the change in the date of the game. With the ap proval of the officials of Washington and Lee, Dr. R. K. Foster and head coach, Don McCallister, the arrange ments were completed because of popular demand. The Gamecocks will have only one week between the Furman tilt and the one with W. and L., two of the prin cipal teams on its schedule. The origi nal arrangements called for two weeks of practice between the game with the Purple team and the last year's con ference champs. Carolina will be endeavoring to win their first and only conference victory of this season, having been beaten by all the conference foes played this year. The Generals have had a much better season than Carolina but the Birds have been steadily improving and will be out to get revenge for their loss of last year to W. and L. which was also in Columbia. The game, although attracting much interest, would have been overshadow ed by the more important state title encounter in Greenville. The University of South Carolina meets the highly favored Furman team in Columbia this week while Washing ton and Lee will come to blows against Maryland at College Park. The past week. Washington and Lee defeated the strong Virginia team 20 to 0 and will be the favorites to win this week's tilt with Maryland. Coach Don McCallister issued the following statement: "The Gamecock squad will enter the W. and L game in a crippled condition and short on reserve material. Our chances have been hurt grealty by in juries sustained by a small and light squad that has had to face an excep tionally hard schedule. Our opponents have outweighed us 20 pounds to the man. If the men on the Carolina squad had not been in an exceptional condi tion throughout the year, it would have been difficult for uts to place a team on the field. The coaches have a higher regard for the team that loses only after a bitter fight. The staff and team appreciates the loyal support given us by the Carolina students and alumni." -U. This is a com 3 mendable move on the part of the of ficials in charge and will furnish the nec essary spark to make the occasion a success. The Purple Hurricane will arrive Sat urday for the express purpose of gain ing their first victory in three years. Top-heavy favorites, the heavier Fur man team, along with Clemson, are the potential state champions. The strength of the purple and white squad can be easily seen by their 29 to 0 victory over Wofford the past week. They rolled up the total of 270 yards compared to 50 for Wofford and the second team played most of the game. Boasts Strong Team The Purple Paladians are boasting the best team they have had in over '15 years and besides its usually strong de fense, has been piling up an amazing amount of yardage. This great team has lost only one encounter this season and all games have been won by decisive B scores. Their great defensive strength is shown by the sum total of points scored on it-31 points. Only one teanr has scored on them this season, and that by the mighty Georgia eleven that has been sweeping all competition aside. Their offensive forces have made 204 yards, eight times as many yards as have been garnered against the purple team. Carolina has not been so successful, they making only 64 yards to 145 for their opponents. They have nonly won two state games while their games in -foreign fields have proven fruitless. The Birdl team has been practicing strenu ously for two weeks in anticipation of the game ani1 the players are expected tc b- e in tine p)hysical condition.
