Papoo4 Intra-Mural Plans Made As has been the custom at Carolina for the past several years, there will be intra-mural athletic competit'on be- G tween the tenements and the fraterni ties, Jack Crawford, gym instructor an nounced today. This year there will be competition in basketball, track, boxing, and possibly tag football. There ou has been some objection against foot- Sc ball games for boys who were not hi, physically able to stand the strain of sc tackle football. The danger of in juries and the lack of proper equip- ta( ment were important reasons for the pr officials decision to discontinue tackle ye football. Mr. Crawford stated that ut: there would be tag football if the stu- be; dents desired it. su: Basketball games will start early next after the varsity has completed on its schedule. Track and boxing will Ca start in the early spring. W Individual medals will be awarded ofi to the winners in the various sports, in1 and a loving cup will be given to the lin winning team. er There has been a great deal of -in- Dt terest shown in intra-mural athletics to since they were started. It is a noble work and our Hddies Predictions Last week's predictions ran true to form and we guessed correctly all the outcomes except the Hampden-Sydney and Virginia contest. The little school of Hampden Sydney upset the heavy favorite Cavaliers by the score of 12 to 7. Alabama was rudely upset when Harvard tied theni 7 to 7. One tie, one miss, and 13 correct guesses is not bad in anybody's backyard. Flushed with victory and success, we will try our prognostications on this week's games. Here goes. Tulane-Auburn. These greenies look pretty good to us. Georgia-Chatta nooga. The powerful bulldog that whipped Mercer and by a large score should repeat this week. Ga. Tech-Sewanee. Ga. Teach's fine showing against P. C. gives them the position as the favorite. Tenn.-N. C. State is one of the toughest games of the week but we will string along with Tennessee. Virginia-Davidson. Davidson even after the defeat handed them by N. C. State the past week. Clemson-Wake Forest. A n o t h e r tough one but Clemson's home-coming day should be marked with success. Alabama-George Washington. Even after the tie game last week, Alabama will come back strong. Watch out, Ga. Wash. Navy-Mercer. Mercer did not look very impressive in their 31 to 0 loss to Georgia. Furman-P. C. Furman's smashing victory over Piedmont looked good. P. C.'s loss to Clemson was not close. It will be the purple hurricane. Citadel-Erskine. Although as yet un tried, Citadel is our pick. Wofford-Guiliford. Wofford looked good against W. and L. The touch downs against them were finally made on passes. Duke-Wash. and Lee. The heavy team of W. and L. will not be able to cope with the team Wallace Wade sends on the field. Mississippi-Southwestern. Ole Miss. will be too strong. N. C. State-Carolina. The Game cocks will come back strong but State's reserves are too strong. -vU. ". o. Boxing Team Holds Meet In order to limber up early and thus get a start on competitors for positions on the varsity, several of the subs on last year's boxing team as well as a few of last year's varsity came out Wednesday afternoon for their first workout of the present fistic season. Brown, heavyweight for Carolina for the- last two years, reportedl for prac tice. James Ackerman, John WVoodrow, and Dave Galloway, all aspiring for varsity positions this year, were present. Andy 1Hill, wvho madle a name for him self, on the team of two years ago, was supervising the boys and giving tips here and there, incidlentally being shown up by an inexperienced freshman of 115 poundls. Much in the way of newv material is expected to showv up at late practice sessions. Rex Williams, who fought several exhibition bouts last year, is expected to go places for Carolina this year as a light heavy. Others of in tramural and freshman renowVn will probably be out for the team. "COLUMBIA'S MOST UNIQUE" Opposite the Jefferson Hotel Open All Night Phone 8754 S YOUR STORES 14 .. The game was played on Mel ton Field and approximately 3,000 per sons turned out to catch a glimpse of the widely heralded Carolina freshman team. The most outstanding factor of the game was the numerous penalties im posed upon Carolina, chiefly for off sides. Carolina was set-back ten times for being off-sides and also received one 15 yard penalty, which gave them a total loss of 65 yards in penalties. Most of the penalties came during the first half of the game but as the game lengthened, the penalties became fewer. Only one week of practice had been held by the biddies and the lack of co-ordination can be accredited to that. Four touchdowns an'd a safety marked Carolina's scoring for the day. The touchdowns came in the first, third, and two in the fourth periods. The safety was realized early in the second pass when the Newberry center passed the ball over the goal line where it was recovered by one of his team-mates, who was tackled before he could move from behind his goal. The sparkling back of the day was Ed Clary who besides making one of the markers, ripped off several long gains. He showed great potentialities and bids well to fill the shoes of his cousins, Earl and Wilburn, who have starred for the Gamecocks the past four or five years. The team was very powerful, their only fault being the lack of team work which is expected to come later with more practice. Ralph Dearth, brilliant quarterback, sliced off-tackle for two touchdowns as well as guiding his team through the game in an admirable manner. Jerry Hughes, of Orangeburg, who scored the only other touchdown of the game, was fast and shifty while the Durham brothers from Greenville proved theni selves powerful and agile backs. Gee Makovic, guard, broke up many New berry plays and his tackling was very decisive. The biddies proved that they were all that had been said of them and with hard practice during the next week, should send a formidable team against the freshman of P. C. at the Pee Dee fair, Thursday. Some interesting data was brought forward when it was discovered that Newberry lost 66 yards on line plays and amassed the sum total of 9 yards on passes. Carolina's biddies made 266 yards although their attempted paes were groundled. Carolina made 17 first downs to 1 for Newberry. Newberry's one first and ten camne as a result of a five yard penalty. Trhe punting of both teams wvas poor, Carolina averaging 31 yards, while the Newberry Papoosies averaged 28 yards. -U. 3. O.
