FROSH TILT POSTPONED The scheduled Carolina-Newberry football game for this afternoon has been postponed until Monday after noon in memory of George B. Cromer, who died in the Charlotte sanitorium Wednesday night. Mr. Cromer was chairman of the board of trustees of Newberry College and former president of the same institution. MAJNit.* Primet 01 Birds Meet . Duke Devils Carolina Is Underdog The University of South Carolina's Gamecocks will meet the Blue Devils from Duke at Durham, N. C., Saturday afternoon in a game that is expected to have a great bearing on the South ern Conference title race. Both teams, fresh from a smashing victory the past week over weaker foes, will have their first real test of the season. Duke is the .top-heavy favorite but the magnificent showing of the Carolina warriors against Ers kine Saturday when they piled up 33 points to none for their opponents, tends to make the game much closer than originally expected. Duke has a much larger squad than Carolina although the Birds will not be outweighed very much. The 26 to 7 defeat of Wake Forest Saturday marks Duke as a powerful eleven es pecially as the second team of the victors played one-half of the game. Ace Parker, dynamite quarter-back, who made three touchdowns in the Wake Forest game, and who is al ready being talked as all-Southern con ference material, will lead the Devils on the expected path of victory. In Harwood Smith, a smashing full back, Duke also has another good back as shown by his return of Wake Forest's kickoff for a touchdown. The run was for 95 yards, the longest run of the present season in the nation. Wal lace Wade, Duke's mentor, is out for revenge for the defeat handed him by Carolina when he was making his debut at Duke, and his plans are to make the victory, if one, as decisive as nossible. On the other hand, Carolina, the mystery team, threw off its cloak of mystery Saturday when they sub merged Erskine and instantly sent their stock soaring. Under the direc tion of the new coaching staff from Ohio composed of head coach, Mc Callister, with Stamman, Pauly and Petosky, the roosters have shown un expected strength and quite a few baf fling tricks are expected to spring from the rnaches repertoire. Knowing them selves to be the underdogs and with nothing to lose, the players are ex pected to throw discretion to the winds and offer such an attack that Duke will be entirely baffled. With Paul Gaffney, already being mentioned on the all-Southern conference team, and Wilburn Clary, star back who scored three touchdowns against Erskine, the Gamecock team should be one of the most formidable foes of Duke's pres ent schedule. With Wallace Wade bubbling with confidence, the Carolina coaches seem to b)e a bit pessimistic but one must remember that this wvas the same at titude that wvas put forwvard the p)ast week. Assistant Coach Carl Stamman, wvho scoutedl the D)uke eleven last Saturday said the Blue Devils were a powerful aggregation but wvere somewhat stale at times. Voicing the same attitude as that of the other coaches, he sa id the Birds would probably get out wvith a 12 point defeat if they played top foot ball. This mysterious something is nothing other than the true Carolina spirit that has been shown by the stu dents this year. This new feeling is due largely to the new coaching staff that have instilled a fighting spirit on the campus as well as among the players. The new freshman class must also be given credit for this turn to the better. They have attended the pep meetings in a body and have cheered loud and lustily. The cheer leaders are overjoyed at the way the Carolina cheering section responded Saturday and plans are going forward for new cheers and a grea'ter Carolina ig spirit. The one gloomy note to the _ pep meetings, is the obvious lack of upperclassmen. Are you upperclass men going to let the "rats" show you what a true spirit is? Attend the pep meetings and sit in the cheering sec tion and show our athletic teams that we are behind them.
