Dean Fryerson Becomes
Chief State Organizer
(CONTINUED FKOll PAQE ONE)
The dean made his first bid for national
recognition in the famous
"Goble v. American Railway Express"
case (120 S. C. 511). Since that time he
has devoted his life to Corporation
Law and Dean of the Law School here.
In view of his untiring efforts to bring
Long before the people of this locality,
the appointment was unanimously 1
adopted by Long officials. It is j
rumored that the Seldom Society will r
be reorganized to take over the politi- i
cal program on the campus; however, (
"Little Dean" Moyle, present head of 1
the society, could not be located for a s
statement. t
The dapper Kingfish who is himself
in the words of William H. Tafft, one <
of the best, if not the best liyers who ,
ever appeared before him while he was i
chief-justice of the Supreme Court of I
the United States, was influenced in t
his decision he says, by the cordial wel- i
come and support the above members 1
of the University campus accorded
him while here on his recent visit. <
The Dean was somewhat modest and ?
reluctant in commenting on his selec- f
tion but announced his lieutenants in t
the coming campaign to intrench the
Sharc-Our-Health idea thoroughly in i
the minds of South Carolinians. They <
are as follows: <
Julian Von Bradsher, Hyman Rubin,
Bill Douglas, "Little Maybank" Koger, i
Vivian Morse, Luke Williamson, Wild
Bill llamby, Ed. Salamander, Bob Avinger,
Betty Payne, Archie Beattie,
Tracy Snelling, Hot Man Crossman,
and Kelly Gillespie.
Barefoot Day For
Freshmen Made Easier
(CONTINUED FROM PAOE ONE)
a perfect opening for "Step 'n Fetchit"
Lipscomb to ask what could be done
with eighty cents, and he finally got
the grudging admission that Winny
was contemplating taking one of his
enamoratas to the Carolina.
While all this was going on, the
others had all formed a ring, squatting
around like Indians smoking a peace
pipe. The pipe was needed later.
Trouble started when "Bottom Card"
Morse insisted that he get the first
deal, but Nellie Frierson calmly reminded
him that the last time he had
dealt the first hand the game broke up
before the deal was passed. But Big
Shot Babcock broke up the argument
with a disdainful wave of his hand.
"The last time Irvin Cobb and I
played poker?" he began, but before
he could finish his tale Hurricane Merriweather
took the deck and began
flipping out the papers, his long locks
flying, his eyes sn pping with the joy
of battle. But still the game was delayed.
I* oxy Coleman, who had been
rushing around in his usual flurry, suddenly
accosted Charlie Mercer and demanded
immediate payment of twenyeight
cents. Now, Mr. Mercer, known
everywhere as the Man with the Master
Mind, had no time to dally over
what he called "a mer pittance."
It might be that now," Eoxy retorted,
but last week when you were light
on my pot you were all hugs and kisses
about it. My motto is if you can't
coon, tie your dog."
He s right," chimed in Dr. Penny,
the Number 1 wo Bug Alan, "I move
that anybody who owes money from
former games be barred from this one
tonight."
1 wenty men leaped to their feet in
a storm of protest. It was finally decided
that no new rules would be
adopted, so the game started, albeit
there was still a rumble of dissent from
some of the crowd.
Meanwhile, the group in the other
corner were faring better. Wizard
Walsh had produced a pair of dice, and
money began to change hands at an
appalling rate. Low Country Waterfall
seemed to be in his prime with the
ivories.
"Dices-be dices," he prayed fervently,
while Wiley Brown turned on all his
ugliness to keep seven off the top. The
dice stopped on four.
