The University Glee Club, under the q

V. Deer In Hand
Is Hard To Get
o Says Doctor Bass
fho Tried To Kill Them All At
Once, But?Well, Bead
The Poem
rofessor Bass went hunting, just the
other day
e hoped to kill at least one deer, if
one got in his way.
ow startled was the hunter when he
saw right up ahead
hree deer eating grass within a space
no bigger than a bed.
n ordinary man would have shot
without a thought
>f waiting till they all got in a row.
ut not so Bass?he sat down beneath
a tree
nd swore he'd kill them all before
he'd go.
lie deer munched on. They seemed
to know
)f nothing to get hot and bothered
over.
oor creatures?how were they to
guess the fate
hat even then was working to their
woe.
t last the second Nimrod saw his
chance to deal
estruction on a fearsome, wholesale
scale,
[e raised his trusty musket to a level
with his prey
nd sent a load of grapeshot on its
way.
he deer leaped high with terror,
nd with mighty leaps and bounds
hook off the dust of that ill-fated
spot.
nd Bass almost broke into tears of
sorrow and dismay
;hen he saw that none of them would
drop.
ow you bums I know this poetry
isn't all that you might hope,
ut there is a moral hidden in its lines,
ne deer that you can carry home
> worth two in the briars.
