Intrai Ask Campus To Entei Medals To Be Awarded Entry List, Enthusiasm, And Interest Grows As Time For Opening Bouts Nears Intra-mural Boxing starts officially Monday, March IX, at the Field House. Many contestants have already reported and Coach DcMars wishes many others, who arc good boxers to report as soon as possible. In addition to those who have already reported: Rufus Morgan, KID; Frank Tilman, 145; Ackerman, 151); Dan McLeod, i:il); Mackie Mills, 190; and Bill Howie, i:$9 have reported. Galloway and Chlids are expected to report for the heavyweight or the light-heavyweight. All men who expect to enter are asked to report by Friday, March 15, so that drawings may be taken on that day. There are many men on the campus who have the natural ability to box1 but will not come out; it is hoped that these will report before Friday. Medals are to be given to the winner of each weight as has been done in the past. The winners of last year arc not eligible to try out this year. murals. Members of the varsity and Freshman teams who have made awards are not eligible. Coach DeMars said that he hoped the different Tenements and Fraternities would put out individual teams. I?P-BMS8 nurali g Glove Men I p By Friday Eight Golfers Qualify In the qualifiying rounds for the varsity golf team held at Ridgewood Country Club the past weekend, eight men were selected for the squad. They were the following: Crawford White, Bob Leahy, Harlie Sparrow, Avery Finger, Jack Cobb, Freeman Coggans, Byron Abraham, and Allen Clarkson. Matches for the team have been arranged with Furman and Richmond Academy prep school of Augusta. Jack ,Crawford, director of physical activities, hopes to arrange matches with Clemson, Davidson, and The College of Charleston. Allen Clarkson is player-manager of the team this year. 8 Lettermen Back For Team | Bat And Ball Boys Work | Twenty-Six Players Turn Out Monday. Others Expected Last Of Week Eight lettermen from last year's squad returned when the baseball team began practice Monday under Coach "Dutch" Stamman. Equipment was issued to the 2G players out for the first practice and around thirty-five men arc cxpectcd by the end of the week. Kncecc, Williamson, Brown, Watson, Brogden, J. A. Munn, Alexander and Blair are the regulars from last year's team who arc returning. John Munn and "Chicko" Brown are co-captains with "Cocky" Blair, as alternate-captain. Under the leadership of these veterans the team is expected to whip into shape rapidly for the first game with Michigan St?Kte, March 28, in Columbia. The State College League of which Carolina is a member will begin April 1. The following positions will be contested, but these players appear the best in pre-season practice. Foster The Athletic Department of the University hopes to sec rapid progress for the betterment of every phase and type of althetics in all of the high schools and colleges of the Palmetto State. In this improvement it is our ambition to see Carolina set the pace and hold the lead. The University has today the best qualified and balanced coaching staff that we have ever had; men who have graduated from Illinois, Washington and Jefferson, Roanoke, Michigan and South Carolina and who had the distinctive privilege of receiving their football training under such Master Coaches as Zuppke, Yost, and Andy Kerr. There is more evidence of the old Carolina spirit and Gamecock fight on the campus already than there has been in many years. It will be unreasonable to expect a string of victories next season but we do confidently expect our supporters to find pride and pleasure in the dash and spirit of the Carolina Gamecocks. Coach McCallister earnestly desires to impress upon every student and prospective student that there is always an open place on the Carolina teams for the athletes who will zealously battle for and win his place. The athletic authorities wagered him that he couldn't run the supply cage at the school without losing enough socks, shoes, sweat clothes, and uniforms during the season to start a young athlete's relief agency. The lad from Ohio took them up. The latest odds are 10 to 1 against the school. About 1400 towels vanished into thin air last year?just as an example. I his year not a towel is missing, nor a shoe lace, helmet, sweat shirt, football, or anything else. And towels are nothing to dry off on and discard, either. Averaging :<0 a day at a cent a piece for laundering, a season's bill is about $120. And losing 1400 towels shrinks the pocketbook?any pocket book. This year the boys complain a bit about Steve keeping them up nights looking for stray towels. lint the Athletic Board squawks not a squawk. They are getting more sleep thinking of next year's budget under the new order of things than they've had in quite a spell. It cost about $4,500 a year to run the supply cage at the University in the past. Steve estimates the cost this year at about $1,500. The secret, according to him is organization. Football is a rugged game and it is folly for any one to kid himself into believing that when he goes in for football it is just a game played for / the fun, or the results obtained immediately after the close of the con- i test. J We start our practice session with a hard calisthenic drill conducted in a more or less military ( fashion. Our drill and body build- r ing exercises are strenuous and after a time become drugery. s e Therefore, we feel that football is a s game that if worth playing at all is worth the necessary labor and sacrifice for proper training. It would be s folly for a boy to do the necessary j hard work to become conditioned for , his Saturday afternoon trials and at j the same time do things to off-set that t work he has done during the week. We want every athlete at the * University of South Carolina to feel that the coaching staff has their interest at heart, not only as a player, but in their entire college 1 preparation. We hope that some day the faculties in the High ^ Schools of South Carolina will have a larger number of graduates who have completed their courses in the College of Education at the < University of South Carolina.
