Taylo Campus 200 Engage III Intra Tourney High Contests Here 21 Teams Will Play 8 Game Series During League Play; Rules Stated Twenty-one basketball teams, representing over 200 students in the tenements and fraternities of the University, swung into action in the annual Intramural Basketball Tournament last week. Each team will play a series of eight games during the three week period of the tourney. A selection of eight teams to play off for the championship and a handsome silver trophy presented by Sylvan Brothers will then be made by Jack Crawford, director of physical education, who is in chargc of the tournament. Eligibility rules of the tournament are as follows: Any bona fide member of the student body of the University of South Carolina is eligible tc play provided that lie has not played in any freshman game against another university or college this or any other year or played any part of any game on the varsity basketball squad ol this or any other university or college Tenements and fraternities participating in the tourney are, tenements 1 anc 2, tenements 26, 27, and 28; A. T. O. Phi Sigma Kappa, S. A. K., K. A. Sigma Nil, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi tenements 0 and 10, Phi Kappa Sigma Alpha Beta, Pi K. A., Delta Sigma Pi tenements 14 and 1.1, tenements ('? ant 7, tenements 18 and 10, tenements :* -1, and 5, tenement 20. Coach A. W. "Rock" Norman will he unable to accompany the team due to the High School Coaches Clinic being held here. Those making the trip will be Joe Cardwcll, running the mile; Kenneth Sease, competing in the half mile; Epps entered in the 00 yard dash and the pole vault; Basil Pcttit running the 70 yard high hurdles and Tom Craig in the shot putt and high jump events. In addition to these varsity men several freshmen are expected to make the trip and compete in a number of events. Taylor's eye was bleeding but he hadn't slowed a bit and had the bout on ice. The crowd booed the referee plenty. Lorenzo should have been the Conference champ in his weight. Question: Do you think he will make it next year? Answer: If his cut heals and he gets a break he'll take the title hands down. If he hadn't been injured this season he should have whipped Hahn, the champ, without breaking a sweat. THAT IS ALL WE WANTED TO KNOW!Envoy And while we arc on the subject we might mention the fact that the sports writers attending the Tourney gave Humphlett a big hand. One said Hill was the most sportsmanlike fighter he had ever seen. The Carolina welter had his Duke opponent out on his feet in the second round of their scrap. Instead of rushing in for the kill Humphlett stepped back from the helpless boxer and turned to the referee. That worthy motioned the Hird fighter on. Mercifully, the Gamecock tried to end the bout with one blow. He didn't quite make it. A few seconds later the fight was called and Humphlett awarded a technical K. O. tilt with the alumni will open the season and a large crowd is expected to witness the match. Students will also have another chance of viewing some good fencing when the College of Charleston meets the alumni team from Carolina in the gym Saturday afternoon at o'clock. All contestants arc asked to report to Coach Frankie DeMars as soon as possible. Medals will be given to the winning fighters as in former years. It is hoped that the different tenements, and fraternities will put out individual teams this year as this will make the competition stronger than heretofore. These bouts are excellent as producing possible material _ for tuture Boxing teams and great ? talent is shown among the group. Foster, Cantcy, Farr, and Wright, all outstanding football officials will be in charge of the game. It is rumored that the University will not have a swimming team this year. Tsk. The first thing we know they won't give us an appropriation for our skiing team, either. One Whitey This column would like to call attention to one Whitey Rawl. Rawl is at present manager of the canteen, and , in addition to holding this job is in a position to render invaluable aid to the University and in particular to Coach McCallister. Rawl is one of the foremost of the South's football scouts. McCallister can use his ability and thus leave his own staff free to concentrate on the football team. In pa?i years, the freshmen have been neglected, due mainly to the fact that <?.r> freshmen have been turned loose, under the guidance of one man, and coaching the frosli is no one man job. Rawl. we believe, in his free time will be able to aid the coaching of the freshman team.
