Beaux Arts Ball
Now In Spotlight

Johnston, who will be the guest of honor
for the occasion, a Virginia Reel danced
by the members of the Beaux Arts Club,
and the selection of the Belle of the Bail
among the girls present not members of
the club.
At intermission it is planned to serve
coffee and sandwiches on tlie mezzine
floor of the hotel.
The decorations of the ballroom will
carry out the motif of the ball. The
ceiling will be covered with a canopy
of red. white and blue streamers interspersed
with Confederate flags. Around
the walls will be hung more flags and
pictures of leaders of the Confederacy.
The mirrors will be banked with smilax
and the orchestra stand will be surrounded
with palms. Miss Klsie Taber
is chairman of the decorations committee.
Buster Spatin and his Gamecocks will
plav for the ball.
A feature of the program will be the
presentation of the colors of the various
social fraternities on the campus to
the girl selected to be the Belle of the
Ball.
Invitations were sent out this week but
all have not yet been sent out and members
of the invitation committee are having
difficulty in getting up the complete
list. Because of the large expense
involved in putting on the dance and
the small membership of the club a subscription
of $1.25 will be charged. Miss
Mary Stuart Aycock is chairman of the
invitation committee.
Those invited to chaperonc the ball
include the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor,
the Speaker of the Mouse of Representatives,
and administrative officers
of the University as well as parents of
members of the club.
Last year the Beaux Arts Club used as
the motif for its ball the Louis XIV period
and the ball was judged one of the
most colorful ever held at the University.
This year it was originally hoped to
hold the ball in the State House in order
to further carry out the Confederate
motif but a bill to allow the club the
use of the State House, after having
passed the House of Representatives,
was withdrawn in the face of objections
by the authorities of the University.

G. G. Dowling, Jr., was editor of
the Carolinian, president of the Sigma
Nu fraternity, manager of the boxing
team, assistant editor of the Garnci
and Black, associate editor of the
Carolinian, a member of the honor
committee, assistant manager of the
boxing team, and Pan-Hellenic representative.
Joseph Cardwell made track numerals,
was secretary and treasury of the
freshman class and of the student
body and has made letters on the varsity
track and boxing teams.
John Gregg MeMaster was president
of the sophomore class and of
the Beaux Arts, as well as a social
fraternity. He has been a member
of the Pan-Hellenic and a member of
the Glee club for two years.
David Hamilton was vice-president,
literary critic, financial secretary and
censor of the Euphradian Literary society.
He is now president of that
group. He has also been secretary of
the German club, a Pan-Hellenic
Council member, a Student Council
member and a member of the Foreign
Relations club.
1 homas T. Moore has been business
manager of the Gamecock and is now
an associate managing editor*. He
has been president of the Alpha Beta
fraternity, a Pan-Hellenic representative,
and manager of the fencing team.
George W. Tomlin, Jr., is vicepresident
of the senior class and has
been president of Delta Sigma Pi and
business manager of the Handbook.
He was awarded the Hutchinson
scholarship in economics.
Wesley Walker is now editor-inchief
of the Garnet ami Black. He
has made both numerals and letters
in tennis.
Harold Mitison was manager of
football team and former president of
German club.
Kenneth Sease has been outstanding
in track and sports.
To be eligible for membership in
Omicron Delta Kappa a man must
have gotten 100 points based upon an
olTicial point list compiled by the local
chapter. He then must be elected by
the members of the chapter.
Omicron Delta Kappa was founded
at Washington and Lee University in
1014 and has from that time expanded
throughout the country. Most of its
expansion has been in the south and
southeast.
Bryants* Bill Rejected
After Heated Debate

The question was asked of Mr. Bryant
by one of the members whether passage
of the bill would keep members from
holding an office in the society and at
the same time representing the organization
on the Student Board of Publications,
Student Council, or Debating
Council. Mr. Bryant replied that it
would.
In opposing the two-phase amendment,
J. \\ iley Brown said that lie saw no reason
why it should be passed since nobody
ever doubted the society's part ownership
of the Gamccock. lie declared further,
regarding the second provision of
the amendment, that he didn't think that
the organization would ever be so foolish
as to elect one man to more than one
office in the society at one time.
I think that it is perfectly alright for
a man to hold a society office, say treasurer,
and still represent the society on
the Student Board of Publications, Student
Council, or the Debating Council,"
asserted Mr. Brown.
Argument against the amendment was
heatedly made by Ray Stokes, Julian
Bradsher, C. M. Shiver, Kd Sims and
other members. After two hours wrangling
the amendment was voted down and
Mr. Brown moved that the Parliamentary
Clincher be applied. The motion carried,
making all future consideration of the
motion impossible.
Preceding debate on the motion, George
Jeffries, Arthur Sams, Jr., and John
Gregg McMasters were elected into the
society. I wo men proposed for honorary
membership failed to he elected.
Medals were awarded winners in the
recent oratorical and declamation contests
in the society. Those receiving the
medals were: Harper Welborn, winner
in oratorical contest; Sidney Young, winner
in declamation contest; Stanley Bryant,
winner in debating contest.
