Sorority Gives Dance Tonight At Jeff er son Hotel Amelia Fowles And Oerda Sylvan Will Lead Tri-Delt Figure; Fraternities Get Blanket Bid The Tri-Dclta annual formal dance will be held tonight at the Jefferson hotel from 10:30 until 1:30. Active members, pledges, and alumni will attend the dance. The Tri-Delt figure will be led by Amelia Fowles, president, and Gerda Sylvan, vice-president. The hall will be attractively decorated with the sorority colors, silver, gold and blue, and the stafs and crescent. Blanket bids have been sent to all fraternities on the campus and individual bids have been issued to those not thus represented. The mothers of the girls in the sorority have bepn invited to chaperon for the occasion. The entire sorority has been invited to a drop-in to be given by Henrietta Bailey before the dance. Several TriDeltas from other Universities have been invited to attend. Cohen Gives Rare Oak For University Grounds A rare specimen of Japanese Oak was given to the University by Dr. D. R. Coker, trustee of the University and resident of HartsvillC. Among the collection of plants given by Dr. Coker was the beautiful Stuartia, which is a rare blooming flower, native to South Carolina. Alpha Delta Pi and Delta Delta Delta were the sororities. One non-sorority girl was taken in. The following were accepted: Kitty Drunimftnd, Emily Timberlake, Polly Belser, Hamilton Warren, Sarah Williamson, Betty Wrenchell, Helen Townsend, Ainiee Urquhart, Gulie Helser, who was a member of Damas, was not in school last semester. She automatically becomes a member again. Arthur Sams and George JefTeries went to Beaufort for the week end. Sigma Chi Sigma Chi pledged James Timmons Wednesday night at the chapter house. Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta recently pledged Kitty Drummond, Emily Timberlake and Ainiee Urquhart. Chi Omega Jean Campbell, Julia Hyatt. Mary Parrel 1 and Harriet Lever will be initiated into Chi Omega Monday night. Dot Dunnovant is filling the unexpired term of the president, Elizabeth I honias, who has not returned to Harbin Speaks At Vesper Services Y Quartet On Program Harbin Nationally Known As Leader Of Young People Dr. E. O. Harbin of Nashville, Tenn., director of recreation and personal development of the Southern Methodist Chuch will speak at vespers Sunday night at 7:00 o'clock. He is nationally known as a leader of young people and is in wide demand as a leader of recreation. During the past week, he conducted a leisure time conference under the auspices of Wesley Foundation of Washington Street Methodist Church. He also spoke at Columbia College and at the University chapel. Dr. Harbin is the author of several pamphlets and books on games, contests, etc., and is the author of the book, "Phrenology," which is an outline of party events. The Y. M. C. A. quartet, including Harvy Spann, Jim Gibson, Mary Gaskin, and Wilds Gillespie will sing for the occasion. Bill Hawkins went to Spartanburg last week end. Sigma Nu The interior of the Sigma Nu house is being repainted. A party will be given when it is completed. A formal initiation will he held by the alumni Monday night. Six boys will be initiated. They are: Arthur Robinson, Tom Moore, Fletcher Spigner, Jimmy Goggins, Herbert McMurphy and Arthur Holman. The election was held Monday night, February 18. Irene Chitty Takes Office Irene Chitty was installed as president of the Euphrosynean Literary society to succeed Lodema "Dink" Gaines at a meeting of the society Wednesday afternoon in the Euphradian hall. "Dink" Gaines, the out-going president, was presented a silver loving cup by Catherine Townscnd. the outgoing treasurer. Other officers to be installed were Anne Jones, vice-president; Elizabeth Anson, secretary; Elise Taber, treasurer; Mary Verncr, critic; and Maxine Scarborough, censor. Professor Cook's Son Comes to His Rescue A tale of fierce and defiant courage was told in class recently by Prof, i Vernon Cook. It seems that there was a visitor in the Cook home, and the evening meal was attended with more than the usual ceremony. 1'lie ta^k of carving a roasted fowl fell to the head of the household, Mr. Cook. Encountering an unusually tough joint, the professor hail moved forward to the edge of his chair when that article of furniture suddenly slid from beneath him and hit the Hoor with a crash, leaving him clinging to the edge of the table in a half standing, half sitting position. Since then Dr. Baker has informed the class president, Werbcr Bryan, that Drayton Hall could he used but no refreshments could be served for fear of injury to it. Refreshments will be served in the 1 field house from ) to 10. immediately followed by a dance. It hasn't been I definitely decided whether or not the dance will be formal. The class voted to engage for the music, either 1 he Gamecock orchestra " or Ajax Deluxe, the final decision resting with the class treasurer, Bryan Walton. Mr. Walton reported that only $77 had been collected thus r far. It is understood that adini>sion will be charged at the door. Mr. 1 Walton, working in conjunction with an entertainment committee to be named later, will be in charge of ar| ranging refreshments and decorations. It was understood at first that anybody other than juniors and seniors L could attend, but Mr. Walton announced later that only members of ? the two classes might attend either phase of the affair.
