U. P., asking a stigation of his recent dismiss; ihe board of trustees. White, of Duke Universit committee, after investigation, r< ed a verdict indicting the institi on charges of having violated tl ciation's principles of (1) tenui (2) academic freedom. In the spring of 1933 Professor Ca michael was engagee^ by Preside) Gwathmcy of Converse as head of tl department of philosophy and ps chology. He was at that time teac ing in the Richmond division of W liam and Mary college. He accept* the position on the basis of the plea ant impression of it he received fro Dr. Gwathmcy. His classes attract* a large enrolment after being herald* by Dr. Gwathmcy. All went well first, then rumors began to circula I that his teaching was upsetting tl religious orthodoxy of some of 1 students. In October or Novcmb three or four members of the board trustees became disturbed and me tioned the matter to the chairman the board, who suggested to Preside Gwathniev that lie look into t matter. Professor Carmichael 'w warned of the matter by the preside after which he tried to observe t precautions suggested. On March the beard met to consider appoii incuts for the next year. The boa voted not to renew his appointmei On April 7 Professor Carmichael r ceived a brief notice of his discharf. President Gwathmcy showed the coi niittee a by-law of the college statii that a professor may be discharged f any cause at any time. As to the issue of academic freedc in the case, the committee stated th it is one of the principles of the A. L1.
