Twenty-seven Carolina footbs
after supper for Greenville wher
chance at the state title on Manl;
o'clock.
Optimism prevailed among the local
boys this week as they alternated between
offensive, defensive, and drills
in fundamentals.
"We have got to win this game,"
doggedly declared "Pott" Brown, an
all season consistent lineman, while
Captain Craig echoed cockily, "It's
jnst a matter of how much we shall
beat 'cm."
Somewhat more conservative comes
the opinion of Coach Laval, "If the
boys are up to their playing against
V. P. I. we'll win. If they play like
they ditl against Villanova, we'll lose."
Doubt was expressed last night as
to whether or not Wilburn Clary
would make the trip. He won't be
able to play although he may go to
Greenville, Laval says.
State schools this year are rather
peculiarly placed. A Carolina victory
tomorrow would result in a three
cornered tie, provided the Baptists
down Clemson Thanksgiving. Should
Carolina lose, the championship would
lie between the Tigers and the Hurricane.
A get-together 1 u n c h e o n of all
alumni will be held at the Poinsett
Hotel in Greenville at 12 noon Saturday.
The meeting will be over* in
plenty of time for the game at 2:l$0.
Dr. L. T. Baker, Dr. Havilah Babcock,
and Professor J. Rion McKissick, have
beeu asked to make addresses at the
meeting. Carolina alumni have reserved
seats and can procure them
from Carpenter Bros. Drug Store,
across the street from the Poinsett
Hotel, until 12 o'clock tomorrow, at
which time they will be moved to the
scene "of action.
At present the Purple Breeze has
the narrow margin of one victory over
Carolina, the results standing at 0 to
10, with last year's scoreless tie game
the only one in 38 years competition.
Last year's classic was a heart
rending aftair for supporters of both
teams. Spectators held their breath as
Carolina was stopped four times on
the 10-yard line and as the Birds retaliated
twice to hold the visitors on
9-yard marker.
'I he only true comparison of the
two teams' strength is the game with
Citadel. Carolina might be the better
or they might have just been in the
luck when she downed the Bulldogs
19-6. Furman barely topped the cadets

Freshmen numerals may be awarded
n in boxing this year for the first time in
the history of that sport at the University,
according to Dr. R. K. Foster,
director of student activities. Numerals
will be given only to those men
j who stay out the entire season, train
steadily, and show real boxing promise.
Coach Frankic DeMars thinks
that if any of the men develop enough
boxing skill and reach the proper cond'tion,
preliminary bouts before the
varsity tilts may be arranged for the
1 Freshmen.
Ring work for the twenty-seven
boxers now working out in the gym
? will start in a week or so. Plenty of
time is being allowed for the men to
c
get in good condition before they
don the gloves.
New equipment lias been added to
the gym for the boxers. The men arc
now working out on two springing
bags, the first of this type to be used
by the squad. New sweat clothcs are
a brilliant scarlet.
Hilton, winner of last year's 149^
pound Intramural championship, is
showing class in his pre-season workouts.
Captain Bill Humphlett, welterweight,
is rapidly rounding into shape,
while Andy Hill and Lorenzo Taylor,
two of last year's lettermen, arc going
through their routine daily. After two
' year's of comparative obscurity, Dave
Stoddard has begun to show signs of

Carolina has not produced a firstclass
heavyweight in several years and
the team is in need of men in this
division. Carolina has developed
champions in almost every department
and it is hoped that this year
progress can he made in this phase
of the game. Hefty men are found on
all the varsity teams of the University
except the varsity hoxing squad. It is
hoped that some of these men will
show that they have got what it takes
and turn out for a ring career.
Last year Coach DeMars took practically
a whole squad to the Southern
Conference and brought back a Conference
championship. Henry Willard,
one of the few football men to
go out for boxing, won the lightheavy
crown after only a couple of years of
training. This year DeMars hopes to
take another squad to Virginia and
come back with several Conference
titles.
Boxers at Carolina arc subjected to
a vigorous round of training before
they are allowed to step into the ring.
When they go into a bout, it is because
they have shown decided skill
in the fistic art, and no man on a
Carolina team is ever allowed to go
on in an unequal bout in which a
heavier or more experienced opponent
may subject him to a beating physically
injurious.
Many men are still needed to fill out
the roster of the squad this year, and
it is hoped that new men will report
immediately.

Villanova's Wildcat's made it two
in a row when they defeated the Gamecock's
last Saturday 20-6. Led by
Nick Kotys, fast moving 162-pound
half-back, the PennsJyvanians proved
too much for the Bird aggregation.
Kotys scored two touchdowns and
passed to Emmerling, sub right halfback,
for the third marker of the game.
Carolina threatened twice, once when
Captain Tom Craig barely missed a
long ,>ass from Harold Mauney and
again when GafTney snagged a Mauney
pass on the 4-yard line. Villanova held
and punted out of danger.
Points after touchdown were booted
by Bernie Lee, Wildcat guard. Lee's
try for a field goal in the second quarter
fell short. Both touchdowns for
Villanova was made on sweeping end
runs that the Gamecocks were unable
to stop.
Villanova gained 281 yards rushing
while Carolina garnered but 85. Fifteen
first downs were accredited to
the Wildcat team and five to the Birds.
Both teams received one penalty of
five yards each. Carolina completed
three of her 15 forward passes for a
total of 33 yards while Villanova
gaiwd 2G yards on two passes completed
of the eight tried.
This evens Carolina's wins and
losses for the season. To date the
Birds have won over Erskine, Citadel
and V. P. I. and lost to Clemson, N. C.
State and Villanova.

Morchead, member of last year's varsity,
has been aiding Coach Norman,
and the Biddies hope to throw their
full strength against what is supposed
to be the best yearling team produced
at Furman in many years.
Shifts in the line-up of the Frosh
team have been made in an effort to
get a winning combination. Pat Tobias,
injured early in the season, is
back in uniform and may start the
game today at guard. Murray, former
centcr, is now trying for a back position
and Stilhvell is another linesman
who is out for a ball-carrying position.
The Citadel rats will be played by
the Biddies in the final game of the
season November 23 at Charleston.
So far the Bird first year men have
won one and lost one. Presbyterian
fell before them in their first game of
the season while Clemson took their
