Spring Pageant Opinion
For several years debating circles
have been trying to decide whether
or not the populace is capable of determining
who shall hold offices and
other places of honor. In a mild way
our student body has, it seems, come
to the conclusion that we are not
quite worthy of deciding just who
shall hold some of these pedestals of
much honor and so we decided to call
upon outside friends to tell us, who
had all the year to find the girl most
queenly, the names of those girls
most fitted for office. Is it that wc
have lost our eye for beauty or is it
that we wish to agree to surrender
our principles of democratic elections?
Now of course I realize that the
purpose of the pageant was to take the
May queen election out of politics,
but why should we? Women are
pleading for equal rights so let's give
them to them. 1 he boys must take
the raw side of the deal in their campaigns
so in view of the fact that
women sare today in governmental
politics such elections should prove
a good place to practice and try their
abilities. We have The Gamecock for
future journalists to practice in, the
moot court for future lawyers to practice
in, so let's give our future stateswomen
a place in which to whet their
ambitions.
I realize too, that anyone may still
be nominated but I ask you what
chance has she against one chosen in
the pageant with the prestige it established?
Atid so I strongly advocate
that we abolish this system or else employ
a brain trust with Hitler as chairman
of the committee, to appoint all
officers while we twittle our thumbs
and honor those chosen by persons
who after all may be more capable of
choosing leaders than we poor ignorant
students who have come to college
to learn which end is up.
