Addresses Meeting Of Yates
Snowden History Club
Friday Night
Pointing out the peculiar analogy of
an overwhelmingly Catholic country
with a popular government pursuing
a violent anti-church policy, Professor
VV. H. Callcott traced, the developments
of Mexican church policy at a
meeting of Yates Snowden History
Club last Friday night. He termed
the position of the Catholic church in
Mexico today as that of "abject pleading"
for its very existence.
Beginning with the overthrown of
the church oligarchy and the passage
of the Constitution of 1845 lie traced
the increasingly severe measures taken
by the government from that time on
and described the counter movements
of the church which eventually lead to
the complete overthrow of the clerical
power.
He said that the Mexican mind
seems completely to separate religious
from political considerations. Although
the average Mexican remains
staunchly Catholic on the spiritual
side he is absolutely opposed to clerical
interference in politics. In line
with this he pointed out the situation
that existed just before the recent reapproachment
with the Vatican, when
though the nation was under a virtual
interdict and a sort of religious apathy
seized the people, there was no thought
of concessions to the Holy Sea.
He concluded by pointing out that
though Mexico has been torn by this
strife for years she still remains 1)5
per cent Catholic and Protestant leaders
themselves have said that they can
see little chance in changing this ratio.
He said that the Y. M. C. A. seems
to be the only effectual agent of Protestanism
and quoted the phrase that
the reason for the Y. M. C. A.'s success
was due to its "invasion of
Mexico with a basket ball in one
hand."

It was originally planned to have a

but because of increased prices caused
by the X. R. A. it was necessary to dispense
with this additional expense.
Architects for the project arc Sumwalt
