Eight Students
Leave School
Professionalism Cause
Clary, Wolf, Hambright,
Tompkins', M au n e y,
Shinn, Laurie Involved
Eight outstanding University of
South Carolina athletes were expelled
from school yesterday on chargcs of
professionalism, subsidation and bribery.
Included in the report against
the men was a minute investigation of
the alleged rowdiness in tenement 25.
commonly known as Keeley Hall and
undisputed evidence that led to the
action was presented.
Earl Clary, Grayson Wolf, Fred
Hambright, Freddy Tompkins, Benny
Tompkins, Harold Mauney, Dick
Shinn, and Vic Laurie were the students
involved.
Coach Laval, aided by the Alumni
association was instrumental in securfekking
their dismissal and seemed very
B)itter towards the whole bunch. The
rouble was begun when Blarney Early
H>vcrhcard Shinn and Laurie discussing
Hheir relative salaries. Laurie is
H]uoted as saying, "Why, I can hardly
?xist on the $-45 a month that I get
Hiow. It's positively ridiculous the
way they're cutting us." Early im mediately
started an investigation
^^ which led to their expelling.
The University faculty announced
through Dr. Reed Smith, their secreHtary,
that a petition would be circulated
Hamong the faculty to have the men re instatcd
immediately. Laval and Early
said they would oppose any such move, '
moii the grounds that they were given a
B fair hearing and deserved the punishI
ment. Laval also added that lie would
I refuse to have any professionals on his
I squads.
Dr. Josiah Morse and Dr. Hugh
I Murchison are expected to present
evidence at a new hearing which will
I prove beyond a doubt the excellent
I scholastical achievement of the eight
I men, and on that ground will hope to
I have the players re-admitted.
Some of the sections of the report
were:
1. Earl Clary was given an iccI
cream soda by Dr. Sam Derrick on
I March 22. 15 cents subsidation.
2. Grayson Wolf (2 counts) (a)
receiving laundry on credit at canteen |
?special professional favor; (b) got a
grade of "A" on Bible 21, through brib- ]
ery of professor. (Note: this charge
is being challenged by Professor Murchison.)

3. Fred Hambright?undoubted cvi- '
dence produced to show that he was a '
professional gigolo in June and July, '
3 032; affirmed by Elizabeth Creighton,
who said she paid him $400 to escort (
her to a German dance, and Steve c
Baker, who said she gave him certain
intrinsic tokens, for his services at an '
A. D. Pi party. *
4. Vic Laurie?received from Paul j
Greenstein, one Studebaker coach for
services of a professional nature.
5. Dick Sh inn?convicted on professional
counts through evidence of
Evelyn Walker and Mary Furtick.

Athletes Keep In
Strict Training
"I am perfectly content that there i:
no dissipation whatsoever among anj
of the athletes that I coach," was tin
welcomed statement made by hcac
coach William A. Laval in answer tc
the accusation that "Nosey" Raby
"Towhcad" Johnson, "Flathead" Alex
andcr and 26 other football player:
were seen in Bible class under the in
flucncc of whiskey. It is perfectly un
derstood that the complaint was mad<
by '"Dutch" Willard and "Spot" Mo
zingo.
"I trust my boys all the time and 1
am sure that they would do nothing a
any time to eliminate themselves fron
the pink of condition. I further branc
the talcs as lies, and will pass then
over only after I receive an apologj
from Willard and Mozingo, said coacl
Laval.
Mr. Willard and Mr. Mozingo ar<
the co-presidents of the campus tem
perancc society. They declare tha
they have had nothing to do with tlx
complaints, but thought that it was
the work of the A. D. Pi Sorority, ii
an effort to get more of the footbal
players to follow in the steps ol
"Queenic" Evans and "Snake-eye'
Hamilton by visiting them nightly.

CAN KEELEY TAKE IT?
That's the question being asked
around the campus these days. It
is rumored that Harry Hamilton
took it into his head one time to
make money, but this has not been
proven. On the other hand, "Sow"
Sliinn certainly can take it?didn't
someone say that a certain Keeleyite
is sewing baby ribbons and putting
aside pennies for the long
awaited blessed event. Boy, can
the "Sow" take it!!! Still, Early
Clary now can't take it more than
half a pint at a time. So the question
is a moot one. Form your
own conclusion?Can Keeley take
it or not?

"I Foster Releases
J Grid Schedule *
Dr. Ralph K. Foster, director of ^
stewed activities, announced with deep
regret that the contemplated gridiron
tilt with Notre Dame has been can- ?
celled. The reason, according to Dr.
Foster, is insufficient nerve on the part
of Notre Dame's fragile backficld man,
who fear contact with such luminaries
as Joe Shinn, Earl Clary, ct al.
Negotiations are now being made v
with the athletic director of the Bon- n
Air Kindergarten for a game on the c]
r date made open by Notre Dame's can- g
i cellation. Dr. Foster has high hopes (1
that this school will condescend to jj
^ give us a game. ?
The schedule this year is headed by t<
- the season's classic with the Allen
University Tarballs. As usual this p
game will headline the annual Negro n
State Fair. The Allen University boys tl
are usually dark horses in the state n
race, and their scrap with the Horse- a
doctors should be well shaded. P
To mix in a few "crip" games with 1
lc the difficult, Dr. 'Foster has scheduled ^
ic the Trojans of Southern California
)- and the Panthers of Pittsburgh. These
games will come on Saturday follow- ,
ing tilts with such whirlwinds as Wof- ^
ford and Erskine. In this way the (j
rs Trojan and Panther teams will act as q
"breathers" for the Horscdoctors. In ^
games of this kind Coach Laval usually p
employs the scrubs in order to let
the regulars get plastered.
The complete schedule is as follows: |]
September 21?Bon-Air at Columbia (j
(tentative).
September 28?Wofford at Spartanburg.
October 4?(Afternoon) University w
f of Southern California. (Night) University
of Pittsburgh.
k October 11?Allen University, (an ^
' extra charge of one dollar will be assessed
each student for this game.) p
a October 18?University of Sing 3
, Sing at Ossining. 1
' October 25?Erskine at Due West.
rl November 24?Auburn at Columbia, \
3e (probably will be shifted to Mont- 11
gomery). 11

Dr. Morse in his statement to the
