I Open
The intramural football season
I started off with a bang Monday after
noon when tenements 1 and 2 crushed
tenemants 16 and 17, 29 to 7. Ten
I games have been scheduled in the first
bracket with seventeen teams already
I entered. More teams are expected to
be entered in the next few days.
The tournament will continue into
I the middle of January when the team
I with the best percentage will be
j&9Pr awarded a silver trophy.
In the other two games played to
date, Phi Pi Phi took a 28 to 0 beating
from a strong tenement 28-29
team. Coach Joe Shinn has been
working hard on his charges and
promises stiff opposition to every team
in the league; Pi Kappa Phi trounced
tenements .'{-4-5, 19-0 in a hard fought
game. The vicious tackling of Hale
for the losers and the brilliant work
of Hank Gooding for the victors was
outstanding.
The schedule as arranged so far is:
Thursday?December 8, Phi Sigma j
Kappa vs. Sigma Nu.
Friday?December 9, S. A. K. vs.
Kappa Alpha.

For Practice
Monday night the first varsity
basketball practice of the year was
held under the tutelage of Coach A.
W. Norman. This was exactly one
month before the Gamecocks' opening
game with the University of Kentucky
Wildcats.
Sixteen men reported to the first I
practice, although several football men
arc expected to report within the next
few practices. Practice will be held I
every night at 8 o'clock in the University
Field House and will continue
through the Christmas holidays.
Coach Norman and Manager Ellison
are trying to schedule a few practice
games during this month.
Those who reported Monday night
besides Captain "Buck" Smith were:
Vic Laurie, Ed Ncvcrgold, George
Hart, Fred Tompkins, Benny Tompkins,
Dana Henderson, Red Baker,
Paul Greenstein, Allen Rollins, Archie
Vaughn, Roy Powell, Hank Gooding,
Ed Sallenger, Bob Killingsworth and
Walter Taylor. John Rowland reported
Tuesday night and Red Ray
is also expected to join the squad.
The new uniforms for this year have
arrived and they will be in the University
colors for the first time in
several years, the trunks being black
with garnet stripes down the sides,
and the home jerseys being white with
garnet numerals. The traveling jerseys
arc black with garnet numerals.
Varsity Squads
Enjoy Banquet
I he varsity football and basketball
squads were guests of honor at a
banquet on Wednesday afternoon. The
squads met in front of the Field
House at 3 o'clock and from there I
journeyed to Lake Murray.
Manning Evans was the host to the I
men and also to quite a number of I
alumni and supporters of the team.
Captain Imizz Freeman was presented
with a handsome g'old wrist watch by
the alumni for his leadership during
the current season.
The men will also be guests at a
simitar affair next week at Sheriff I
Heise's lake.

The Birmingham Trip
The handful of students who
journeyed down to Birmingham with
the valiant Gamecock team will never
regret or forget the trip. The comeback
of the Birds that thrilled the
nation was only one feature of the
trip. Birmingham opened wide its
portals and welcomed the Carolina
students as no other city has done this
year.
Football Immortals
Harold Mauney, Earl Clary, et
al, will probably go down in Carolina
football history as immortals.
They stopped a team that nobody
else could stop, and they stopped
an All-American halfback, (also
whom nobody else could stop).
They not only stopped and completely
throttled the famous
Hitchcock, but they outplayed
him. Not being satisfied with their
20-20 tie, the Birds were well on
the way to another touchdown as
the game ended. Carolina supporters
insist that had the game lasted
another two minutes the score
would have been 34-20, Carolina.
Looking Ahead
The game attracted nation-wide attention
and gave Carolina more publicity
than she ever received before.
This should help decidedly in getting
the Gamecocks games with stronger
Conference foes in 1 933. Coach Laval
and Dr. Foster have gone to the Conference
meeting to complete the
schedule. And wotta team they're
gonna have!!

Temple-First Opponent
Temple University has announced
South Carolina as their
opening opponent next September
20, in Philadelphia. This will
be particularly pleasing, in view of
the fact that Glenn S. (Pop)
Warner has just resigned from
the head coach at position Stanford
U. and accepted the head
mentor job at Temple. It will be
the second time that Carolina has
met a nationally famous Coach in
an intersectional game. The 1928
Gamecocks having beat Alonzo
Stagg*s Chicago team that year.
It gives Carolina two intersectional
games next year, with
Temple and Villanova, both Philadelphia
teams. Temple lost its
only game this season to Villanova,
7-0.
