In Society Speech
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE)
with pride to the repeated prizes The
Gamecock and the Carolinian have
won in press associations. Yet I
wonder if the societies themselves
have been largely responsible for this
succoss.
Practically all our students are interested
in work on the publications,
yet all students are not interested in
literary societies. We should not give
up our publications, but we should
awake to campus conditions, and for
the best interests of the University be
willing to share our control with
others who arc just as capable of
managing them."
The new president criticized politics
in the board of publications and declared
that should it continue, the
societies may expect the student body
to take away the publications by force.
The board members must act for the
interests of the publications, instead of
for the interests of themselves, he
added.
Mr. Shepherd advocated stricter
qualifications for membership in the
society and for revision of the programs.
He suggested that the society
be divided into two groups as in a
legislative body.
Preceding the inauguration, Carlisle
Roberts, retiring president delivered
his ex-augural address. The other
minor officers were also installed.
This meeting combined both the installation
of officers and a reception.
A quartet from Allen University sung
spiriturals and popular songs throughout
the evening.

frequent reference to Clariosophians
of the past who became famous in
after life.
"There must be a revival of interest,
a reorganization of government, and
a concentrated action on the part of
every member toward a common end,"
Stokes said in conclusion.
Immediately preceding the inauguration
of the new president, William C.
Herbert, head of the outgoing administration,
addressed the society
briefly, reviewing the work that had
been accomplished during his term of
office.
The society passed a resolution providing
that $25 be contributed to the
campus fund for paving the sidewalks.
Lester L,. Hamilton of McColl was
elected to.tlie office of critic to succeed
J. W. Greene, who did not return to
school this semester.
