1 FRATERNITY NEWS] The Phi Sigma Kappa house on College street is now being remodeled and painted. Lewis West and Dan Brown were visitors at the Phi Sigma Kappa house during the week-end. "Buck" Norwood of Maricin was pledged to the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity Monday. Visitors at the Pi Kappa Phi house over the week-end included Euke Reeves of W. and L., and R. B. Hilderbrand. At a meeting of the Sigma Phi Epsilon pledges Tuesday night Charles Hajek was elected president and Earle S Tikidmore was named secretary. Frank E. Plair, an S. P. E. at Georgia Tech, visited the local chapter this week. Pledge C. C. Leaphart sponsored a yachting party Thursday at Lake Murray in honor of the Sigma Pfii Epsilons. The Sigma Phi Epsilons will be cntertanied again Sunday afternoon with a tea given by the South Carolina Alumni chapter of this fraternity. Sigma Nu announces the pledging of Henry Stuckey of Sumter. Hugh Coker, T. Duckett Young, Pratt Gasque and E. B. Fishburne I visited the Sigma Nu house during the past week-end. Doctor L. H. Lipscomb of Florence visited the Sigma Chi's at their home ' Saturday night. Allen Donelan, of Columbia, was in- ! itiated into Pi Kappa Alpha Sunday , afternoon. Mr. Donelan is a sophomore in the University. Wyatt Wood was pledged K. A. Phi Pi Phi announces the pledging of L. W. Higbe, Jr., and M. F. Campbell. Buster Joyner, J. C. Brooker, and John Turner were recent visitors of the house. Phi Sigma Kappa entertained its , pledges with an informal dance at their ( home on College Street last Friday < night. THURSDAY NIGHT , The Florence Nightingale Circle of < Alpha Kappa Gamma leadership sorority 1 met Thursday afternoon, at 5 o'clock in the senior parlor of the Woman's Build-, ing for the first time this year. The main question nder discussion was the method of dett ;ning eligibility of members. A point ? .tern was offered i to the sorority for ',ate by Darice j Jackson and Dorothy Penland, and was ' accepted. ?fiveral names were brought up and will be voted upon shortly. The sorority has ordered a copy of Whistler's "Nocturne" and will present i it soon to the Woman's Dormitory. 1 Besides Miss Jackson, the new officers < are: Dorothy Whaley, vice-president; Mary B. Taylor, secretary; and Dorothy Penland, treasurer. i INTELLIGENCE TESTS BASIS FOR FRES The Personnel Bureau wishes to cor- 1 feet a general misapprehension picvalent t among students that no use is made of i the various tests given at the beginning s of the year. Considerable use is being f made of these tests as a partial basis of i professional guidance, administration and ' "?counsel. r c This year the test scores were used t in registering freshmen as a basis of a variation of course load. Those students within the lowest fifth of scores of the a freshmen class were limited to four r courses. This was done as a possible t means of reducing failures among poorly a prepared students. Similarly, recognition j, was made of the fact that the upper fifth ( of incoming freshmen class is intellec- t tually and scholastically capable of carry- j ing more work than the average and so were permitted to register for six j courses if they desired. The middle three- j fifths were assigned to the normal five ,% courses. s In addition to this use of the test data c at the time of registration, the English ? Department based its classification of O. D. K. GIVES OUT CAROLINA STICKERS Will Be Distributed To Students And Alumni Through Postoffice * Five thousand attractive "Carolina" stickers have been printed, and will be given out/to students free of charge on next Monday and Tuesday. These will be presented by the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership fraternity as a gift to the student-body. The design has the word "Carolina" appearing on the top of a triangle, and a Gamectock standing on the background of a drawing of the shape of the state of South Carolina. They are printed on garnet paper. The stickers will be delivered to the students from the postoffice. A large number will be mailed to the alumni. O. D. K. has made many contributions to the University?among them being the sun dial in front of the Law Building. The fraternity was also instrumental in having the telephone exchange installed. WILBUR ZEIGLER Wilbur Zeigler, former instructor in the Romance Language department of the University, in a letter to Professor Oscar L. Keith says that he misses Carolina and feels that he has not really left it but is only on a vacation. Mr. Zeigler left the University seven months ago to take over a job with the British-American Tobacco Company in Cristobal. The letter gives a very interesting Insight into the life that Mr. Zeigler is leading in the southern hemisphere. "I am getting so sunburned," reads the letter, "that I expect to be taken for a native by the tourists." FROSH MEDICAL EXAMS CHECKED Things are never dull at the University Infirmary. W. C. Bushaw and F. Harper, /ictims of last week's automobile accident, were dismissed Friday. Frank McCoy, who was recently initiated to the 'Sans Appendix" society, has returned to lis normal routine. J. W. Gaddy was put o bed Tuesday with a cold which Mrs. Madden states "verges on tonsilitis." Colds have been popular with the girls, llso. Martha Derrick and Lucia Huggins vere dismissed Tuesday after a visit of ;everal days. Freshman medical examinations are low being rechecked and every day wrings its stray student for a belated examination. u. s. c. This miniature car may be seen parked in the rear of the imposing edifice at the head of Sumter Street every day at one o'clock. USED AS HMEN COURSE LOAD freshmen into sections on scores made on he Iowa English Training Test, adminstered by the Personnel Bureau. Several pecial sections were created for those reshmen whose scores were found to be n the lower fifth of range of the class. These sections will be given the needed emedial training in English. The Mathmatics Department also made use of he test scores of freshmen as a guide in issigning them to sections. The test scores of upper classmen will ilso come into use in the Personnel Bueau and to some extent, by the dean and he registrar. These will be used chiefly is a source of- information to bring to tear upon difficulties of various kinds. Constant follow-up of scholastic difficulics is being attempted by the Personnel bureau. Members of the Bureau are: W. C. ilcCall, chairman; R. G. Bell, Miss Irene )illard, and R. L. Sumwalt. Mr. McCall ; in charge of testing and statistical tudy. Miss Dillard is serving as eduational counsel for the girls and Mr. tell for the boys. Mr. Sumwalt is availble for vocational counsel.
